The Government of Pará delivered on this Monday (30) the first stage of the works on Avenida Duque de Caxias, another legacy of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30) held in Belém. The stretch between Travessas Antônio Baena and Humaitá was opened to the public with improvements that include the revitalization of the bike lane, pedestrian walkway, sports, leisure, and social interaction areas.

"Today is a special day for the users of Duque de Caxias. We are delivering the first 450 meters of this important space in Belém, which will also be one of the corridors for COP30, a legacy of the event held in our capital. The work included accessibility interventions, new public equipment, landscaping, and urbanization, ensuring more safety and comfort for the population," said the Secretary of Public Works of Pará, Ruy Cabral.

The first stage of the works revitalized the bike lane of the avenue and incorporated a pedestrian walkway in the central median, leisure areas with outdoor gym, benches, trash cans, game tables, picnic spots, and pet space. At Travessa Humaitá, a covered crossing was installed, providing shelter from sun and rain, as well as creating comfort and promoting another resting point.

The interventions also include asphalt paving and road signage, revitalization of roundabouts, installation of medians with flower beds, drainage, tactile accessibility flooring, grass planting, and new lighting.

Residents and workers in the area are already noticing the improvements. “I always cross this stretch and was surprised by the waiting structure installed. It will be important, especially due to the rain and strong sun. It’s a place for us to take shelter. I also saw how everything has improved for pedestrians and cyclists. The State Government deserves congratulations for doing such a work for the benefit of the population,” said sales promoter Orlando Moreira, 50 years old.

Graphic designer Isael Santos, 36 years old, also approved the services executed by the State Department of Public Works (Seop). "This is the third time I’ve passed here by bike just today. It’s a well-made construction, paved and with the quality we need. I always passed here and didn’t have this structure as it is today, much better than before. It’s the innovation that was lacking in previous governments. What we have now is of quality, approved," he evaluated.

Urban mobility

With a total length of 2.5 kilometers and 5,000 meters of roadway, Avenida Duque de Caxias is a strategic arterial road for mobility in the central area of the capital, which absorbs a large part of the traffic in the region. In addition to being located near the Hangar - Convention and Exhibition Center of the Amazon and the City Park, the main hubs for COP30 agendas, it also serves as an alternative route to Belém International Airport.

The interventions aimed at optimizing urban mobility, accessibility, and functionality in the capital of Pará also encompass other roads, such as Dr. Freitas, Pedro Álvares Cabral, Senador Lemos, Almirante Tamandaré, and Visconde de Souza Franco avenues, as well as Belém and Municipalidade streets. Several neighborhoods in the municipality and its districts are included in the set of paving works for COP30.

The works are the result of an agreement signed between the Government of Pará and the Federal Government, through Itaipu Binacional, with works on hundreds of streets and avenues in Belém. The services include paving, earthworks, drainage, sidewalks, curbs, and signage.
