Regional Hospital of Baixo Amazonas humanizes actions to care for long-term patients
Birthday celebrations and bed exits help improve the well-being of users, which is fundamental for recovery and treatment

As a reference in medium and high complexity for a population of 1.4 million residents in 29 municipalities in western Pará, the Dr. Waldemar Penna Regional Hospital of Baixo Amazonas (HRBA), in Santarém, cares for a number of long-term patients. These are users who remain hospitalized in the unit for extended periods of treatment. Currently, the institution has 48 patients in this condition for at least 30 days.
Thinking about the well-being of these individuals, the professionals in the unit promote humanized actions to improve their stay and contribute to their mental and emotional health, which are fundamental in the recovery process.
"The long process of hospitalization generates various stressors that impact the emotional and psychological state of the patient, compromising their mental health. Providing a moment of celebration aims to promote feelings of joy, satisfaction, and well-being," explained the hospital psychologist, Alexandre Vinícius Ferreira.

One of these moments was held for Rosinaldo Pantoja, who celebrated his 62nd birthday this week. He has been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of HRBA for 1 year and 8 months undergoing treatment for a degenerative disease, and the multiprofessional team along with the humanization sector of the institution decided to throw a party to celebrate the occasion.
He was evaluated and had his bed exit approved. Accompanied by technicians and nurses, he went to one of the solariums of the unit to receive congratulations from family members and professionals who assist him every day. A surprise that left the patient and his entire family emotional. "I was happy. I liked everything they prepared and felt that he was also happy," thanked the patient's wife, Maria Helena Santos da Costa.
"What we seek is the humanization of care. We ensure that he has comfort, improves his quality of life, and provides psychological support for both the patient and the family members. Our entire team is committed to offering this to users throughout their hospitalization," emphasized the doctor Cenilde da Costa Araújo.

Other actions - In addition to birthdays, HRBA also carries out other activities with hospitalized patients in the unit, such as therapeutic outings in the hospital's outdoor area and taking photos of babies being treated in the Neonatal ICU, which are given to the mothers of the little ones.
"These actions bring welcome and hope to the patient, who feels remembered and valued in a difficult moment. For the family members, it is a gesture that comforts and strengthens. And for us professionals, it is a way to further humanize care, creating bonds and making the hospital environment lighter and more empathetic. Small gestures like this have a great impact on the recovery and well-being of everyone," emphasized the humanization supervisor, Karine Campos.
Everything with the aim of providing the best experience for those who need health services. "Our commitment is to care for our patients. And this goes beyond treating diseases. We want to provide them with a complete recovery, valuing well-being and mental and emotional health, which are so important in the recovery process," concluded the general director of HRBA, Matheus Coutinho.
