The State Secretariat for Agricultural Development and Fishing (Sedap) presented, this Wednesday (19), the actions of the Government of Pará aimed at the regulation of artisanal fishing during a panel held at the Inter-State Consortium of the Legal Amazon, held in the Green Zone, at the City Park. The activity brought together artisanal fishermen from different colonies in the State and addressed sustainability initiatives that directly benefit riverside and coastal communities.

The program, coordinated by the Fishing Directorate of Sedap, had as its central theme the organization of the fishing production chain and the appreciation of fishermen who operate in areas such as mangroves and islands. The director of Fishing at Sedap, Orlando Lobato, conducted the panel alongside technicians Ediano de Souza Sandes and Thiago Marcelo Pacheco de Oliveira, with participation from artisanal and riverside fisherman Assunção do Socorro Corrêa.

Sustainability of the Uçá crab

One of the highlights of the presentation was the work developed by Sedap to reduce the mortality of the Uçá crab during transport. According to oceanographer Thiago Pacheco, more than 42,000 families from 447 coastal communities in Pará depend directly on the capture of the crab, whose monthly production can reach one million units just in the municipality of Bragança.

“The way of transport directly impacts the conservation of the animal. The cambada, for example, can generate up to 60% mortality, and the raffia sacks, up to 40%,” he explained. In light of this scenario, the then State Secretariat of Fishing and Aquaculture, now Sedap, began to encourage, since 2013, the use of sustainable baskets. “With this change, the survival rate reaches 98%, which ensures higher quality of the product until the final consumer,” Thiago added.

Management of the Amazon shrimp

The production chain of the Amazon shrimp (Macrobrachium amazônicum) was also a topic of the panel. Technician Ediano de Souza highlighted that Sedap is part of the Permanent Fishing Management Committee and has been implementing the Strengthening and Sustainability Program for the Amazon Shrimp Production Chain since 2023.

One of the identified challenges was the improper use of fishing gear, such as the matapi, which contributed to the reduction of the species' capture. The secretariat closely monitors the situation and implements corrective actions based on technical diagnoses.

“On Ilha das Cinzas, in Gurupá, we observed a significant increase in the size of the shrimp, going from 4.5 to 10.5 centimeters. On Ilha das Araras, in Curralinho, we also recorded growth in production. These are results that reinforce the importance of regulation and technical guidance,” Ediano stated.
