“The feeling is one of extreme happiness. It was not an easy process. It required strength, courage, and, above all, faith.” This was what patient Débora dos Santos, 23, said after being discharged from dialysis treatment at the Hemodialysis Center of the General Hospital of Tailândia (HGT). The improvement in the young woman's clinical condition represents an important achievement, allowing her to resume her routine with better quality of life, engaging more actively with family and friends, as well as resuming her personal projects.

Dialysis treatment is a medical procedure used when the kidneys lose the ability to adequately filter the blood, removing waste and excess fluids. Débora started treatment on March 8 and has faced various challenges until her discharge this Thursday.

Débora dos Santos: "Everything was new. But with the support of the professionals, who were always attentive, I adapted to the routine,” she said.

Originally from Tailândia (PA), she began hemodialysis in her own municipality, was transferred to Belém, but returned to continue her follow-up at HGT. “It was a shock at first. Everything was very new. But with the support of the professionals, who were always very attentive, I adapted to the routine,” she shared.

The Hemodialysis Center of HGT has a multidisciplinary team prepared to ensure humane and safe care for chronic kidney patients. Doctors, nurses, technicians, nutritionists, social workers, psychologists, and nursing technicians work together to promote care and quality in treatment. “They were not just professionals; they became friends. I will carry them all in my heart,” Débora emphasized, emotional.

To celebrate the discharge, the team prepared a special tribute: a card with messages of speedy recovery, signed by all the professionals who accompanied the young patient throughout her treatment. Additionally, she was invited to choose the song that would accompany this significant moment of farewell and overcoming.

According to nephrologist Michel Zigmantas, one of the specialists who followed Débora during treatment, she was diagnosed with lupus nephritis, a condition resulting from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease that can severely compromise kidney function.

“Her discharge has great symbolic value, as Débora was accompanied by our team from the beginning. We were present throughout her journey: from the diagnosis, made by us, through the treatment, to her significant improvement, which allowed for the discharge from hemodialysis. This favorable outcome was largely made possible by the state government's investments in the decentralization of nephrology and hemodialysis care in Pará, which has ensured greater agility and efficiency in the treatment of patients with kidney diseases in various regions of our state,” highlighted the specialist.

Structure and care - The Hemodialysis Center reinforces the quality of the assistance provided and highlights the commitment of the multidisciplinary team. Since its inauguration in December 2024, the unit has already performed about 2,710 sessions and currently serves 45 active patients.

Service - The General Hospital of Tailândia is a health unit of the Government of Pará, managed by the National Institute of Social and Human Development (INDSH), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa). The unit is located at Avenida Florianópolis, s/n, Bairro Novo. Information: (91) 3752-3121.
