The Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room (PSRM), in Belém, invests in spreading the culture of sustainability in order to contribute to environmental preservation through actions developed by the institution's Sustainability Commission. One of the initiatives is the donation of recyclable materials discarded by the hospital. Under the "Recycling is Caring for the Environment" Project, plastic, cardboard, and white paper are donated to the Solid Waste Collectors Cooperative of the Amazon (Coopcresam), located in the Condor neighborhood.

At the Cooperative, 12 families - about 40 people - work, benefiting from the donations of recyclable materials. Between the end of 2024 and April 2025, 3,850 kilograms of recyclable materials were donated to Coopcresam.

Social Impact - For the president of the Cooperative, Davi dos Santos Cunha, it is gratifying to receive the donation and contribute to building a cleaner and healthier environment, reducing pollution and health risks for people.

"The waste that arrives at the Cooperative goes through a separation process, so that it can then be sent to the industry, generating financial value for each family that works here. Recycling is a powerful tool for building a more sustainable future, and the participation of every inhabitant of the planet is essential to achieve this goal. We know that we are contributing to the planet, and this is very gratifying because here we are not just helping ourselves, but with the help of partners like you, we are helping our municipality, our state, and the environment," emphasized Davi Cunha.

The "Recycling is Caring for the Environment" Project contributes to the community that works in the collection, sorting, treatment, and commercialization of recyclable materials, ensuring the correct disposal of reusable materials, thus reducing environmental impact. The Sustainability Commission, composed of nearly 20 professionals from various fields, seeks to awaken the interest of everyone in the hospital environment for the reuse of materials as a way to contribute to everyone's health.

Educational Role - One example is the reuse of white papers from administrative functions. This material is reused in activities promoted by the Working Group and Humanization (GTH) and by the Sustainability Commission, such as drawings printed on drafts, recently used in educational approaches with children in Pediatrics.

The paper was also used in decorating the cafeteria tables in homage to Mother's Day, with the making of flowers. The posters used in internal disclosures of events and campaigns that need to be seen by professionals are also printed on discarded papers.

The president of the Sustainability Commission, environmental engineer Rayane Pereira, informed that in the hospital environment, where people are cared for every day, the members of the Commission volunteered to also care for the health of the planet, through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN).

"With our initiative to adopt recycling and donate materials, we give a correct destination to waste, generating opportunity, dignity, and transformation. With this, we contribute to SDG 3 (Health and Well-Being), by promoting a healthier environment; to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), by strengthening the work of collectors; to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), by encouraging responsible practices in urban spaces, and to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), by reducing waste and stimulating the circular economy. Sustainability, here, is also an act of care for people and for the future," reiterated the president of the Commission.

Awareness - According to the general director of the Emergency Room, Carlos Vinícius Ribeiro Quadros, at PSRM, a major producer of recyclable materials, the work of the Sustainability Commission, especially the "Recycling is Caring for the Environment" Project, is important for creating collective environmental awareness.

"This theme has contributed to the creation of a culture of sustainability in our hospital and has been helping to raise awareness among our employees, patients, and companions through lectures and other activities that highlight the importance of recycling and reusing materials that could pollute the environment. With the recycling processes of reusable materials, natural resources are saved, pollution is reduced, and a more efficient production cycle is contributed to. Furthermore, recycling decreases the amount of waste in landfills, reducing soil, water, and air pollution through proper and responsible disposal. It is very important that everyone is involved, that they know the importance of this movement for the good of the planet and health, not only environmental but also for people's health," highlighted the manager.
