By integrating the line of care for the health of the female population, the Hospital da Mulher do Pará (HMPA), in Belém, offers consultations and exams for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Diseases that affect heart health are the leading cause of death worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and among them are hypertension, which causes strokes, and heart attacks.

Prevention is the best way to avoid complications. It is essential to regularly check blood pressure, especially after the age of 40 or in cases of family history. Heloísa Helenna, 65, reports that there are cases in her family, and when she presented the first symptoms of high blood pressure, she sought a cardiologist. “My mother suffered from hypertension, and I already knew I needed to stay alert. When I started feeling some sharp pains in my chest, I got worried. When I went to the doctor, I was also diagnosed with the disease,” says Heloísa.

With monitoring, she is undergoing tests at the Hospital da Mulher do Pará, after being referred by a Basic Health Unit in Belém. “I will do my MAP tests, stress test, and a Holter. I have already done the blood tests, and then I will return to the doctor for evaluation,” adds the patient.

Lifestyle - The treatment of hypertension is largely done through lifestyle changes: balanced diet, regular physical exercise, weight control, reduction of salt intake, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco consumption. In many cases, continuous use of medication is also necessary.

According to the Technical Director of HMPA, intensivist physician Nelma Machado, “in addition to medical specialties such as clinical cardiology, gynecology, mastology, general surgery, vascular surgery, and plastic surgery, we have outpatient clinics for physiotherapy, nursing, and psychology, as well as laboratory tests and imaging diagnostics. Consultations and exams are regulated via the State Health Regulation System. The care is specialized for women and is essential to ensure comprehensive, respectful, and humanized care, considering the specificities of the female audience and the need for health policies aimed at this population.”

To be attended at the Hospital da Mulher, the patient must initially seek care at a Basic Health Unit (UBS), in a unit of the municipality where she resides or in the nearest region, in addition to the medical referral available at the Usinas da Paz.

If a specialist identifies the need for more complex care, the referral request is sent to the State Regulation Center (CER), via the State Regulation System (SER), checking the availability of a spot, and the patient is directed to the appropriate location.

Service: The Cardiology Outpatient Service at the Hospital da Mulher operates from Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 5 pm, and the Imaging Diagnostic Service from 7 am to 4 pm.
The Hospital da Mulher do Pará is located at Avenida Gentil Bittencourt, No. 2175, São Brás neighborhood.
