HRBA launches campaign and increases blood donation participation in Santarém
Campaign at the Regional Hospital of Lower Amazon strengthens Hemopa's blood stocks and reinforces the importance of the gesture that saves lives daily
Cleane Carvalho Viana, 43, accompanies her father who is undergoing treatment at the Dr. Waldemar Penna Regional Hospital of Lower Amazon (HRBA) in Santarém, Western Pará. On Thursday (27), she decided to donate blood for the first time to help not only her loved one but also other people.
"My father is hospitalized and the campaign motivated me to donate. It was very rewarding, it didn't hurt at all, and I recommend: donate blood! Before, I had never thought about making a donation, but today I donated and I did it wholeheartedly," said Cleane, who lives in the Rio das Ilhas community in the municipality of Curuá, also in Western Pará.
With the theme "Sustain life. Donate blood!", the Santarém Regional Hospital promoted the Blood Donation Campaign in partnership with the Hematology and Hemotherapy Center of Pará Foundation (Hemopa). There were 106 participants in the action, with 69 donations completed. The campaign included the assistance of professionals from the Regional Hemocenter and even the participation of the mascot "Sanguinho", encouraging donations.
Participants included patient companions, the general public, and also HRBA staff. One of them was Davi Machado, who has been a laboratory technician at the Hospital for two years. It was the second time he donated blood.
"Helping people is always good. That's why I decided to come. I also participated in the first campaign this year, and now I returned. And whenever there is this type of action, I will be here to participate," he stated.
Reference - The Santarém Regional Hospital is a reference in medium and high complexity in Western Pará and has a transfusion agency that is supplied daily with blood bags donated by the Hemopa Foundation. By October 2025, HRBA had already used 6,021 blood bags, including red blood cells, plasma, and platelets, with an average of 600 bags per month. In some procedures, such as cardiac surgery, up to 10 blood bags may be used to ensure patient safety.
The campaign aimed to raise awareness in society about the importance of this act of solidarity and to secure new donations to increase blood stocks.
"We always encourage this act of love, which is blood donation, by holding at least two campaigns a year. Our transfusion agency is responsible for most of the transfusions performed here in Western Pará, and donations are important so that we can carry out procedures, such as surgeries, as safely as possible, in addition to ensuring that hemocomponents are available to patients who need them during treatment. We thank everyone for their participation and the partnership with Hemopa, and we are sure that this action will benefit many people," highlighted HRBA's general director, Matheus Coutinho.
Blood Donation – People between 16 and 69 years old can donate blood. They must weigh more than 50kg, be in good health, and have eaten on the day of donation. Adolescents aged 16 and 17 must be accompanied by a legal guardian to sign the voluntary blood donor authorization.
