In January of this year, Gilvane Hollerverger, 62 years old, began cancer treatment at the Dr. Waldemar Penna Regional Hospital of Baixo Amazonas (HRBA) in Santarém, in western Pará. A resident of the municipality of Placas, in the Xingu Integration Region, he even considered seeking a health unit outside of Pará, but later decided to receive treatment closer to home.

"We chose to stay here. We know that the treatment is the same, so we preferred to do it here in Santarém, where we are at home. It is much better, for sure. We are very well treated by the doctors, nurses, and all the professionals. Everything is going well, and I already consider myself cured of this disease. I hope God accompanies me, and that I am fortunate enough to overcome this evil," said the patient.

He underwent surgery at the unit, and now he has chemotherapy sessions every 15 days, managing to travel for treatment with ease, leaving Placas, which is about 300 kilometers away, to Santarém.

Comprehensive care - The HRBA is certified by the Ministry of Health as a High Complexity Oncology Assistance Unit (Unacon) and offers complete care, ensuring general, specialized, and comprehensive assistance to cancer patients, from diagnosis to treatment.

"We come on Sundays, and he spends Monday and Tuesday having the sessions. Then, on Tuesday night, we take the bus back. We chose to stay here because it is much closer, and he never wanted to leave here. For me, everything is wonderful, and thanks to God we are here, being very well attended by all the professionals," informed Gilvane's wife, Marta Elisa Chiodi Hollerverger.

A reference in medium and high complexity for a population of 1.4 million people across 29 municipalities in western Pará, the Baixo Amazonas Regional Hospital has been operating for 18 years. It is a fundamental unit for the decentralization of health services in the state. Between 2019 and September 2025, the HRBA performed over 7 million services, including consultations, exams, surgeries, hospitalizations, hemodialysis sessions, and other services.

Close to family - Ruth da Cruz Peixoto, 65 years old, has been a patient at the Regional Hospital since 2009. Originally from the municipality of Prainha, about 150 km from Santarém, she undergoes hemodialysis sessions at the Renal Replacement Therapy Center (CRTS) of the unit three times a week. With treatment closer to home, she can visit her family on weekends. "There was no treatment in my city, and I came here. It was very important because, here in Santarém, I am closer to my family. In Belém, it would be much more complicated. I can visit them, and I alleviate some of the longing. The treatment is very good for me. Everyone treats me very well," she highlighted.

The HRBA offers care in 20 medical specialties and has already established itself as a reference in Oncology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Traumatology, and Renal Replacement Therapy. The institution also maintains the excellence certification from the National Accreditation Organization (ONA), level III, which attests to the high performance in safety and quality of care provided to users.

"We are a reference unit, and we take pride in being able to offer quality health services to the residents of Santarém and other municipalities in the western region of the state. Our commitment is to provide the best possible assistance, and for that, we have a qualified team that works every day to care for our patients. The people of Pará know they can count on the HRBA as a unit of excellence," assured the unit's general director, Matheus Coutinho.

Strengthened network - The Menino Jesus Regional Hospital of Oriximiná (HRMJ) is a reference in Orthopedics and Traumatology for the municipalities in the area known as Calha Norte, in western Pará. Since its inauguration on October 1, 2024, the unit has performed around 65,000 services, 54,159 exams, and 878 surgeries, becoming an important center for public health in the interior of Pará.

With 26 inpatient beds, 16 observation beds, and an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the HRMJ offers medium and high complexity assistance, strengthening the state hospital care network. In addition to serving the population of Oriximiná, the Hospital provides support to the municipalities of Alenquer, Almeirim, Curuá, Faro, Juruti, Monte Alegre, Óbidos, Prainha, and Terra Santa, and also receives patients from other regions of the state.

Among those benefited is Maria Antonieta Andrade de Vasconcelos, 39 years old, a nursing technician and resident of the municipality of Óbidos. She suffered an accident on October 8 and received prompt care at the unit. "Today I am being discharged from the Regional Hospital of Oriximiná. I had an accident and fractured my wrist. With the ease of having care closer to my city, I was able to complete all my treatment here at the Regional," reported Maria Antonieta.

Speed and quality - Regional hospitals play an essential role in the decentralization of public health services, bringing outpatient, surgical, and examination services to various regions of Pará. Previously, many patients had to travel to Belém or nearby municipalities in search of specialized care; today, they find structure and resolution closer to their homes.

"Since my accident, the municipality of Óbidos requested my transfer to the Regional Hospital of Oriximiná. The process was quick, and the team was very attentive. I was very satisfied with my treatment," added the patient.

The HRMJ has a multidisciplinary team composed of specialists in nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, nutrition, psychology, and social services, ensuring quality and effectiveness in the care provided.

The unit also offers laboratory and imaging services, in addition to care in seven medical specialties: Anesthesiology, Cardiology, General Medicine, General and Gynecological Surgery, Orthopedics and Traumatology, and Intensive Medicine.

The general director, Katiuscya Braga, highlighted the importance of the Hospital for the population. “We offer medium and high complexity assistance, with diagnostics, surgical procedures in the specialties of General Surgery, Gynecology, and Orthopedics, in addition to specialized care and attention focused on more complex treatments,” she emphasized.

Located in western Pará, the HRBA and HRMJ provide 100% referenced services, meeting the demand originating from the State Regulation Center. Both units belong to the Government of Pará, being managed by the Social Institute Mais Saúde, in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa).
