Sedap presents the role of the Sustainable Territories Policy in the transition to Low Emissions
In addition to participating in panels, Sedap integrates the booth of the Legal Amazon Consortium with the exhibition of products from Geographical Indications.
One of the State Government's initiatives to minimize the effects of climate change is the Sustainable Territories Program (PTS), launched in 2019. On the afternoon of this Wednesday (12), in the Seringueira Room, located in the Pará Pavilion – in the Green Zone – the Secretary of Agricultural Development and Fisheries (Sedap) presented an overview of how the program is helping to combat deforestation.
During the presentation of the panel "The role of the Sustainable Territories Policy in the transition to Low Emissions", representatives from the secretary and also from the State Secretary of the Environment (Semas) informed how the actions worked by the PTS have contributed to changing the forest scenario with the recovery of previously degraded areas. The program also included representatives from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa).
The program has already served 47 municipalities benefiting 5,040 families, with an estimated cost of R$ 24.68 million, according to the Secretary of Agricultural Development and Fisheries, Giovanni Queiroz. He explained that the families served received, in addition to the initial funding, organization for environmental, land regularization, and rural credit, to increase by more three hectares. Among the municipalities that have already advanced in the execution of the plan, he reported, are Anapu, Brasil Novo, Medicilândia, São Geraldo do Araguaia, Eldorado dos Carajás, São Domingos do Araguaia, and Piçarra.
Expansion- Secretary Queiroz stated that it is Sedap's goal to expand the number of affiliated municipalities. He highlighted the importance of the funding process, developed by the secretary, which establishes the implementation of one hectare of Agroforestry Systems (SAFs) in previously degraded areas.
"Here we discuss the climate, and when we talk about this topic, about the layers of gases and the greenhouse effect that are warming the planet, we have to take care now, and we in agribusiness, agriculture, livestock, and fishing, as is the case with Sedap, want the greatest commitment so that we can capture this carbon dioxide we have in the atmosphere and fix it, and this can only be done through trees, with new production systems, initiatives like sustainable territories, whose main objective is environmental recovery, and most of it is done using cocoa, especially from the Transamazon region," said Queiroz.
The Sustainable Territories program is one of the four strategic pillars of the State Plan Amazon Now, of the State government, which aims to promote sustainable development in the countryside, as presented by Semas.
After participating in the panel, the manager of Sedap, accompanied by the secretary's team, visited the booth of the State Government, located in the area of the Interstate Consortium Legal Amazon, where products from Geographical Indications and Family Agriculture are displayed, in addition to bio-jewelry made with seeds from the Amazon. The space is shared by Sedap and the Secretary of Family Agriculture.
With the goals set and already executed by the program, it will be possible to cover an area of 421.60 km² of preserved area, according to the TS coordinator for Sedap, Tiago Catuxo, who accompanied the program.
