Uepa presents 13 panels on science and innovation in the Green Zone during COP30
The State University of Pará (Uepa) will be one of the Pará institutions present at the 30th World Conference on Climate Change (COP30)
The State University of Pará (Uepa) will be one of the Pará institutions with a significant presence at the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will take place in Belém from November 10 to 21, 2025.
The University had 13 thematic panels approved for the Pará Pavilion, located in the Green Zone, an area open to the public at the conference. The presentations will bring to COP30 the scientific and cultural perspective of the Amazon, highlighting research, technologies, and innovative solutions developed by Uepa professors and researchers in partnership with national and international institutions.
Amazonian knowledge on the agenda
The Uepa panels will discuss the main environmental, social, and economic challenges impacting the Amazon region, focusing on sustainability, climate mitigation, the appreciation of traditional knowledge, and technological innovation.
The University’s participation reinforces the role of science produced in the Amazon and in building strategies for adaptation and mitigation of climate change, consolidating Pará as a hub for environmental and technological solutions for Brazil and the world.
Organization and selection criteria
The Uepa Pro-Rector for Research and Graduate Studies (Propesp), Professor Luanna Fernandes, coordinates the institutional participation. She informed that the selection of the panels began in 2024, based on a survey of projects and reports from Uepa's graduate programs evaluated by Capes.
“The idea was to gather research that dialogues with sustainability, mitigation of environmental disasters, health, and the participation of traditional peoples in this context. We want to show that science and society walk together in the Amazon,” emphasizes Professor Fernandes.
The themes were organized, according to her, by interdisciplinary approach and involve professors from various Uepa campuses. The institutional articulation also received support from the Brazilian Association of Rectors of State and Municipal Universities (Abruem).
Highlight: the value of standing forests
Among the 13 panels, one of the highlights is titled Amazonian Carbon Science: methodologies, valuation, and restoration for a just climate transition, coordinated by Professor Eder Oliveira, Director of Monitoring and Control of Qualification at Uepa.
The panel advocates a vision of sustainability that goes beyond carbon pricing, valuing all ecosystem services of forests — such as climate regulation, soil and spring preservation, ecotourism, and ecosystem restoration.
To achieve this, the team uses drone mapping technologies, geotechnology, and satellites capable of measuring biomass and monitoring deforestation in up to 45 municipalities.
