Schürmann family sailboat docks in Belém, at the Casa das Onze Janelas
The season in the capital of Pará until November 22 includes a wide cultural program, visitation starting Wednesday (5), and reflections on ocean preservation
The sailboat Kat, from the Schürmann family, docked in Belém on the afternoon of this Sunday (2), for a season at the pier of the Casa das Onze Janelas, where it will remain until November 22. During this period, the Casa Voices of the Ocean Project will occupy the location. With support from the Government of Pará, through the State Secretariat of Culture (Secult), the Schürmann family's initiative will promote a meeting of art and science in favor of ocean protection. Visitation will begin on Wednesday (5).
The action also has global support from the UN Environment Program (UNEP). The season in Belém marks the conclusion of the first round-the-world trip of the initiative in defense of the oceans. The Casa Voices of the Ocean will be a meeting point for art, culture, science, and environmental activism.
Realized by the Institute Voice of the Oceans, led by the Schürmann family, the space proposes reflections that connect the Amazon to the ocean, alerting to the urgency of containing climate imbalance.
“This project to occupy the Casa das Onze Janelas brings a very qualified program to discuss our climate challenge, this civilizational crisis we are living. We have a coastal Amazon that needs our attention, our care, especially in mangrove areas. And the artistic intervention here on the facade of the Casa is done by Pará artists, which will expand the experience beyond debates about science, education, and solutions, but also an aesthetic experience that provokes many reflections,” emphasizes the State Secretary of Culture, Ursula Vidal.
“We made a point of setting up a house together with Secult, the Government of Pará, that would be for everyone, that would not be exclusive. It is a space that everyone can experience. We will have cinema sessions, lectures, an exhibition by photographer Luiz Braga, and a second exhibition that is interactive and itinerant. It travels all over Brazil taking people to the ocean, to have an experience of what it is like to sail, to feel underwater. We are very grateful to Secult, to all the artists who embraced us, and I confess it was a surprise this huge embrace. We felt very privileged and very well received,” said David Schürmann, CEO of the Institute Voice of the Oceans.
Visitation - The sailboat will also be open to the public. “We have a way of doing the visit, which is groups of six people. We will announce soon what the specific days of visitation to the sailboat will be. We will welcome as many people as possible to have this experience, of what is a very different sailboat. It has a very strong environmental focus,” David Schürmann added.
The artist and curator Roberta Carvalho explained the artistic conception of the project. “We are bringing the signature of several Pará artists precisely so that art translates this incredible and very important work of the Schürmann family and the Voices of the Ocean Project. It brings to us, to Belém, at this moment where we are debating climate justice, the perspective that talking about the ocean, talking about water, is of extreme importance. These artists will make interventions in corals, bringing this idea of debating coral bleaching, which is already a reflection of climate change in the seas,” said Roberta Carvalho.
The facade will receive a videomapping, art and technology that will show a bit of this dive into the history of this outreach project about the importance of the oceans and seas,” she added.
The space will also feature the exhibition “From River to Sea,” by Pará photographer Luiz Braga.
The Casa Voices of the Ocean will have participation from 50 institutions. Representatives from the public power and the private initiative, as well as academics and young leaders, will gather to discuss agendas and cases focused on the defense of the seas, in a completely free program.
