DRE of Bragança promotes preparatory class for the 2nd phase of the Mathematics Olympiad
The Olympiad is held annually for students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school from public and private schools
On this Friday (24), the Regional Education Directorate (DRE) of Bragança held a review class for students who will participate in the 2nd phase of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP), which will be applied this Saturday (25) across the country.
The meeting took place at the Usina da Paz Theater in the municipality and brought together more than 150 students from 11 public schools in the region: Padre Luiz Gonzaga, Casa da Amizade, Leandro Lobão, Augusto Corrêa, Aluízio Ferreira, César Pinheiro, Rocha, Julião Garcia, SERB, Mâncio Ribeiro, and Yolanda Chaves.
OBMEP is held annually for students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school from public and private schools. This Saturday, 25/10, the second phase of the OBMEP test will be conducted, and the final results, including the list of medalists and awardees, will be announced on December 22.
In Bragança, the Notable Products Mathematics Club, created in 2023, voluntarily by the DRE, offers free classes for students interested in participating in Mathematics Olympiads. The initiative significantly contributes to the recovery of students' learning, providing tips on problem-solving, justification strategies, and guidance for the test, as well as moments of integration and dynamics among schools.
Student Nina Manoela, from Yolanda Chaves school, was a silver medalist in the 2023 Olympiads and speaks about the importance of the assessment. “Before, my story with Mathematics was not the best; I considered it just another subject I needed to pass. But lately, I’ve started to realize how much the Mathematics Olympiads can take us further in our lives, to places far away. For tomorrow, I’m quite anxious, hoping to receive another medal. I will give my best and tell people not to give up because it’s very rewarding to take a test and have a significant result, as proof that the effort was worth it. I thank God, my mother, my teacher Oséas, and the entire team of the Mathematics Club,” said Nina.
The initiative of the Regional Directorate directly aligns with the Federal Government's “Toda a Matemática” program, strengthening the role of public schools as spaces for transformation and social inclusion. Currently, more than 40 students have been awarded. The head of DRE Bragança, Thayse Alvão, emphasizes that the club is consolidating as an example of dedication, social commitment, and appreciation of public education.
“DRE Bragança has been strengthening Mathematics education with the Notable Products Project. In 2024 and 2025, 100% of schools participated in OBMEP, winning medals, knowledge, and love for Mathematics. More than medals, we transform lives, making each student believe in their potential. The National Commitment Toda Matemática, from MEC, reinforces and encourages this important area even more,” emphasized the teacher.
The project is led by state network teacher Oséas Guimarães, who currently integrates the Training Nucleus of DRE Bragança, along with other teachers and volunteer interns.
Recently, club members participated in an important academic moment, presenting papers at the 8th National Symposium on Teacher Training in Mathematics at the University of Brasília (UnB), in Brasília, reinforcing the group's commitment to research and the appreciation of Mathematics education.
Classes take place on Saturdays, in four groups: junior level (5th grade), level 1 (6th and 7th grades), level 2 (8th and 9th grades), and level 3 (high school). About 60 students participate in each meeting, with snacks and teaching materials provided by the regional education office, and the teachers act voluntarily.
Award and recognition - During the event, the awards for students participating in the Kangaroo Mathematics Olympiad were held.
Students, teachers, and schools were also honored in a celebration marked by emotion and collective pride. The program included the screening of thematic films about the importance of encouraging a love for Mathematics and promoting student leadership in the public network.
For the second consecutive year, DRE Bragança has all its 43 schools registered in OBMEP. In the Kangaroo Mathematics Olympiad, the number of participating schools has grown significantly, from four schools in 2024 to 15 in 2025.
By promoting actions such as the preparatory class and strengthening the Notable Products Mathematics Club, DRE Bragança reaffirms its commitment to democratizing access to knowledge, encouraging student leadership, and valuing public schools as spaces for social transformation.
The engagement of teachers, managers, students, and institutional partners consolidates a collective movement that goes beyond preparation for Olympiads: it shapes trajectories, broadens horizons, and inspires young people to believe in their own potential. With significant results, academic recognition, and increasing school participation, the project consolidates as a regional reference in mathematics education, reinforcing the conviction that investing in training is also investing in possible futures.
