Reference hospital in pediatric oncology in Northern Brazil celebrates a decade of commitment to humanized care and excellence in public health

The Octávio Lobo Children's Oncology Hospital (Hoiol) held a celebration on Wednesday (15) marking a decade of operation as a reference in the treatment of childhood and adolescent cancer in Northern Brazil. Inaugurated on October 12, 2015, the public unit of the Government of Pará celebrates the date with the theme "10 years for life at the Park of Joy," reaffirming its commitment to life, humanization, and the welcoming that daily transforms the reality of hundreds of children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment.
Certified by the Ministry of Health since 2017 as a High Complexity Oncology Unit (Unacon), the hospital has more than 500 employees, 89 exclusive beds, including 10 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, and performs high-complexity procedures such as neurosurgeries, head and neck surgeries, and orthopedic interventions. In a decade of operation, 372 children and adolescents have rung the "Victory Bell," a symbol of overcoming and hope that marks the journey of those who conquer childhood and adolescent cancer.
With a solid trajectory, Hoiol has an annual average of 484,390 consultations, reflecting the reach and relevance of specialized public health services. Among these, 256,362 laboratory tests, 94,226 multidisciplinary support consultations, 37,329 chemotherapy infusions, 23,726 medical consultations, 11,724 urgent and emergency consultations, and 4,825 surgical procedures are performed.
The unit also maintains an average annual satisfaction rate of 95.3%, reflecting the management's commitment to quality standards and patient-centered care, which resonates in the trust placed by families in the assistance. For the general director, Sara Castro, the result reflects above all the human capacity to dedicate oneself to the mission of caring for the lives of children and adolescents who pass through the institution.
"It is a day of deep gratitude for being here, celebrating a decade of dedication, commitment, and above all, love for life. The Octávio Lobo Children's Oncology Hospital has built a path marked by challenges, learning, and achievements. We have experienced moments of challenges and struggle, but also of hope, overcoming, and many victories. Here, faith, love, and humanity pulse. May the coming years bring even more achievements and a renewal of the commitment to serve with excellence and welcome with the heart," she said.

Program - The celebration took place in a playful and thematic manner in the toy library on the 5th floor with the participation of clown Tio Bala and singer Luciana Lins and band, along with the presence of employees and patients. On this occasion, the longest-serving employees shared testimonials that recalled the beginning of the hospital's activities.
Speech therapist Nahone Sarges closely followed the growth of many patients who arrived at the hospital as babies and are now adolescents. "We know that the most precious 'good' of many families is in our hands, which is why we are always studying and improving our knowledge to provide the best care for your child. So, I continue here because I believe that my mission is not over yet," she said.
The technical director of Hoiol, Alayde Vieira, recalled the journey of building and consolidating the unit, the growth of each stage, from the walls to the first teams. "We never imagined how many stories of love and overcoming would be lived here. Each professional has an essential role in this mission because caring here is, above all, caring for someone's love. We started by attending 32 patients, and today there are more than 1,300 lives that inspire our daily commitment to faith, dedication, and excellence in care."
