Actions such as the production of hats for newborns bring families closer and help in treatment

On the morning of this Wednesday (15), the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS), in Icoaraci, a district of Belém, held a hat-making workshop with the mothers of newborns hospitalized in the unit. During the activity, each piece received a unique touch from the participants' hands. What they did not imagine was that their own children would be the first to receive the hats produced.

"I thought it would be an action just to relax, pass the time, and forget a little about the challenges here in the hospital. When I found out that my son would be the one to receive the hat made by me, I was very moved. In the end, I even thought I had a knack for it. I will make more when I am at home for him to wear because it turned out very beautiful," said teacher Priscila Lima de Oliveira.

Rosangela Bitencourt said that the activity helped relieve the tension that the hospital routine causes. "Sometimes, we get so focused on our children's health that we forget a little about ourselves. I felt that I was able to think about myself, about other things, and that brought me a very good feeling. In the end, I was also happy to see my son wearing the hat I made with a lot of affection," reported the freelancer.

Humanization - As a reference in obstetric care with open doors 24 hours, the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS) performed more than 5,000 deliveries in 2024 alone. "Given this volume, it is natural that some newborns need specialized follow-up, which can generate some apprehension in families, especially mothers," explained occupational therapist Layane Sena.

The action is part of the humanization activities promoted by the Occupational Therapy (OT) department of HRAS, which seeks to strengthen the bond between mothers and babies during hospitalization. In addition to stimulating the emotional well-being of families, initiatives like this help make the hospital environment more welcoming, contributing to the recovery and development of newborns.

Layane added: "Producing a hat, choosing the decorations, cutting, gluing, and then seeing the result of this work may seem simple, but it generates a positive outcome. This is the role of Hospital Abelardo Santos: to offer patient-centered care, involving the family and promoting humanized treatment at all stages, from hospitalization to recovery," she concluded.
