Mothers of patients receive a moment of self-care at the Hospital de Clínicas
Voluntary action helps relieve tension and daily pains of hospitalization in the pediatric clinic
This Friday morning (03) was one of care and welcome for the mothers of children hospitalized in the pediatric clinic of the Hospital de Clínicas Gaspar Vianna (HC) in Belém. The initiative involved volunteers from an integrative health practices institute, who offered massage sessions aimed at relieving muscle tension and promoting well-being.
Staying in the hospital is often marked by sleepless nights, worries, and physical exhaustion, and the action sought to provide a moment of respite.
For volunteer Sheila Martins, the proposal goes beyond physical relaxation. "Self-care and self-knowledge are essential for health. It is a form of prevention. Often, mothers are completely focused on their children, but if they do not have physical and emotional balance, it also hinders the child's recovery. This moment is for them to feel cared for," she explained.
The action arose from the listening of the multiprofessional team in the wards, when a mother reported pain due to the prolonged time spent in the hospital.
"The children of these mothers are treated for complex diseases that require long hospitalizations. They sleep in armchairs and experience physical discomfort, which reflects in back and leg pain. This report troubled us, and we sought support from volunteers to offer this care through integrative therapies," highlighted Sâmia Medeiros, head of Nursing at the pediatric clinic.
For the mothers, the moment meant not only immediate relief but also support.
"I have been here for a month with my son. This activity helped a lot, not just because of the massage, but also because of the instructions we received. It was only a few minutes, but very rewarding. It served both the body and the mind and the emotional aspect," said Milene da Silva.
As a reference in medium and high complexity, the Hospital de Clínicas Gaspar Vianna reinforces, with actions like this, the commitment to look not only at the patients but also at the families who share the hospital routine.
