Belém hosts the first event in Brazil on the European Space Agency's Biomass Mission
The meeting takes place from September 30 to October 2, bringing together national and international experts at Inpe Amazônia, located in the Guamá Science and Technology Park
From September 30 to October 2, 2025 (Tuesday to Thursday), Belém will host the first event in Brazil dedicated to the Biomass Mission of the European Space Agency (ESA). Entitled “Brazil and European Space Agency Cooperation in Biomass Mission Earth Observation Data and Applications,” the meeting will take place in the auditorium of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) Amazônia - Amazon Spatial Coordination, located in the Guamá Science and Technology Park (PCT), bringing together national and international experts.
Launched in April of this year, the Biomass Mission aims to accurately map the planet's forest biomass and quantify the carbon stocks of forests. The satellite operates with the first P-band radar in orbit, a technology capable of penetrating cloud cover and tree canopies to capture unprecedented information about the three-dimensional structure of forests.
The event is the result of a partnership between ESA, Inpe, and the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), and is supported by Selper Brasil, PCT Guamá, and the Guamá Foundation - which manages the Park. The program includes technical sessions led by ESA experts, panels with researchers from the Amazon region, and presentations of studies on radar remote sensing and integration with national forest monitoring systems.
Aimed at researchers, graduate students, environmental agency staff, representatives from the geotechnology industry, and NGOs, the meeting seeks to empower users in the use of data generated by the mission. The initiative aims to strengthen research and application networks, ranging from combating deforestation to advancing scientific knowledge about the carbon cycle in the Amazon and other biomes.
According to the coordinator of Inpe Amazônia, Alessandra Gomes, the event reinforces the region's prominence in global agendas on climate and sustainability. “It will be the first national event on this satellite, and Inpe Amazônia was chosen to host it due to Inpe's partnerships with ESA in previous agreements and training experiences held in Belém. This is a pre-COP30 event (world conference on climate change), which aims to bring relevant meetings for the tropical forest and analyses on biomass and carbon stocks to the Amazon, important for climate change studies,” she informed.
Reference in innovation - The Guamá Science and Technology Park (PCT) is an initiative of the Government of Pará, through the State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Higher, Professional and Technological Education (Sectet), in partnership with the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and the Federal Rural University of the Amazon (Ufra), and managed by the Guamá Foundation.
It is the first technological park in the Northern region of Brazil, aiming to stimulate applied research and innovative and sustainable entrepreneurship, in order to improve the quality of life of the population.
Located on the banks of the Guamá River, which names the complex, the PCT is situated between the campuses of the two universities and has a rich biodiversity ecosystem, extending over 72 hectares, designated for buildings and the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of the Metropolitan Region of Belém.
The complex has more than 90 companies among residents and associates, 17 laboratories with over 400 researchers, 44 patents, and a technical school.
The PCT Guamá is part of the National Association of Promoters of Innovative Enterprises (Anprotec) and the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (Iasp), and is part of the largest innovation ecosystem in the world.
