State Department of Education (Seduc) distributes educational kits on climate change to state public schools

The State Department of Education (Seduc) has begun distributing educational kits on climate change to schools in the state education network. This action is the result of a partnership with the Central COP Station and the Climate Observatory, international organizations that work on decentralizing the debate on climate challenges and bringing local communities closer to the discussions of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), scheduled for November in Belém.

The goal is to strengthen Environmental Education and Sustainability, a curricular component present in the state education network, and engage students as protagonists in building solutions to face climate change.

“Each school receives a kit with an almanac, the Paris Agreement, and step-by-step materials to support teachers and students in discussions about the topics that will be on the agenda at COP. Schools are strategic spaces to foster this dialogue,” explains Endel Menezes, coordinator of Strategic Projects at the Environmental Education Coordination of Seduc.

The first shipment distributed 200 kits, but the goal is to cover all state schools, from the capital to the interior.

3rd grade student at Salesiano School, João Marins: "The materials show the importance of COP30," he said.

Student leadership

For students, the kits encourage greater knowledge and awareness about the topic. “The materials show the importance of COP30 and further raise awareness among students about the event in our state. It is very important to complement what we already use in school,” says João Martins, 17, a 3rd-grade student at Salesiano School.

Student André Luz, from the 3rd grade of high school: "The material adds environmental education and that is important for today's world"

“Receiving this material is essential for us to deepen discussions about climate change and COP30. Along with environmental education, it also contributes to our personal development, and that is very important for today's world,” added student André Luz, also 17 years old.

Chemistry and Environmental Education teacher, Débora Saba: "The material will reinforce the activities already carried out in the classroom."

Chemistry and Environmental Education teacher Débora Saba emphasizes that the kits will reinforce the activities already carried out in the classroom. “We are very happy to receive this kit, which will contribute to the students' knowledge and complement what we have already taught in the classroom about environmental education.”

The initiative of the Central COP Station seeks to democratize knowledge about the climate crisis, connect communities to the decisions of the conference, and amplify voices about environmental impacts.
