Pará launches Green September campaign at Mangueirão to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation
Sespa highlights advances in transplants and expands social mobilization to reduce the waiting list in the State

The Government of Pará, through the State Department of Public Health (Sespa) and the State Transplant Center (CET), launched this Thursday (28) the Green September campaign at the Olympic Stadium of Pará Journalist Edgar Proença, Mangueirão, in Belém. The official opening took place during the match between Remo and Criciúma, in the B Series of the Brazilian Championship, when the CET team performed an Olympic lap with educational banners and the big screen displayed messages with the slogan: "To donate is to sow a new life."
The campaign aims to raise awareness among the population about the importance of organ and tissue donation and to encourage dialogue within families about this act of solidarity.
Advances and challenges in Pará
According to the coordinator of CET, Dr. Alfredo Abud, Pará has recorded advances in recent years but still faces significant challenges. "We are making great progress in our transplant numbers, with better performance compared to our historical series. However, we are still far from the real need. This year's campaign aims to raise society's awareness to expand this life-saving gesture," he emphasized.
According to the Brazilian Association of Organ Transplants (ABTO), 73,937 people are waiting for a transplant in Brazil, with 1,296 in Pará alone. Between September 2024 and August 2025, the State Transplant Center received 232 notifications of brain death, of which 180 were eligible for donation. However, only 55 became effective donors, due to 77 family refusals, a rate of about 58%.

"Today we already have the technical capacity to identify and maintain potential donors in hospitals. The big challenge is obtaining family authorization. Without consent, the transplant does not happen. Therefore, we need this topic to be discussed at home," the coordinator reinforced.
Growing transplants
Between January and July 2025, Pará performed 266 transplants, including 205 corneas, 36 kidneys, 16 bone marrow, six livers, and three osteomuscular. The numbers show a growth trend compared to the previous year, when 32 multiple organ donations were made.
The decentralization of the process is also advancing, with regional hospitals trained to identify potential donors and support organ procurement in the interior.

"The Green September campaign is aimed at the entire society. We are taking actions to stadiums, hospitals, schools, and public spaces because we want to reach as many people as possible. Only with collective awareness can we reduce the waiting list and transform lives," highlighted Dr. Alfredo Abud.
How to be a donor?
Anyone can be a potential organ and tissue donor. It is not necessary to leave a declaration in a notary or register in official documents. The essential thing is to inform the family of the desire to be a donor, as authorization depends on the relatives.
