With popcorn and soda, 6th-grade students from the Dom Alberto Gaudêncio Ramos State School, in the Paar neighborhood of Ananindeua, participated in a film screening promoted by the State Department of Education (Seduc), in partnership with the 14th Ecofalante Film Festival Pará, this Thursday (28). With audiovisual productions addressing themes of climate change and sustainability, the program engaged students in discussions and promoted environmental awareness in the school environment.

A total of 19 schools from the state education network in Belém, Ananindeua, Marituba, and Benevides were selected to participate in the initiative, which divided the schools into two groups: those that took students to screenings at Cine Líbero Luxardo; and those that are conducting film activities within the school.

According to Taiana Ribeiro, an Environmental Education specialist and member of the Environmental Education Coordination (Ceam) of Seduc, the project contributes to the development of students in building socio-environmental dialogues in schools. “The Ecofalante Film Festival, using short films in education, serves as engaging and accessible pedagogical tools that present complex themes, promoting critical thinking and developing values in children and youth. In addition, it can be used in various subjects and provide meaningful and memorable learning experiences,” she said.

“The selected films address themes worked on in the classroom. Thus, they can directly dialogue with what is already being developed, and cinema acts as a complement to classroom studies. Furthermore, at the end of the screenings, there is a presentation of the main points that students understood from the films, and this moment is incredible. Each one, based on their reality, establishes connections with what was presented, placing themselves in this space of speech and not just listening,” reflected Mateus Rodrigues, coordinator of the Ecofalante Universities Program, the educational extension of the Ecofalante Film Festival.

For 6th-grade student Giovanna Cortés, participating in the program was interesting. “I liked it a lot because the films we watched addressed many themes that I like, such as the environment. Some films were funny and covered new themes as well as themes we have already worked on in the classroom,” she commented.

About Ecofalante - Ecofalante, a Civil Society Organization, aims to create and develop projects that contribute to the sustainable development of the planet through education and culture. Within this proposal, its main project is the Ecofalante Film Festival, one of the largest film festivals in Brazil and the most important cinematic event in South America dedicated to socio-environmental themes.

Held annually since 2012, the Festival screens dozens of films for free and contributes to the dissemination of important and award-winning rare cinematic works to the Brazilian audience, having reached an audience of over 1 million people since its first edition.
