Participating in the Scientific Seminar 'Support Systems and Sustainability in Breastfeeding', promoted by the Health Department of Pará (SESPA), are managers and health professionals from health institutions in Pará, such as the Health Departments of Pará and Belém, the Council of Municipal Health Secretaries, the Pará Society of Pediatrics, and other entities that support breastfeeding and human milk donation, such as the Fire Department of Pará, through the project Firefighter of Life.

The event takes place today (26) and tomorrow (27) at the Auditorium of the Center for Studies and Training in Health of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará Foundation (CETS/FSCMP). For the president of Santa Casa and host of the event, Bruno Carmona, the presence of professionals and representatives from so many health institutions at the event demonstrates the importance of Breastfeeding as an action that unites health institutions of the SUS at all three levels and is a responsibility that Santa Casa of Pará has embraced for almost 4 decades.

“The Human Milk Bank of Santa Casa was created in 1987 and has since fulfilled its role of carrying out actions that encourage breastfeeding and milk donation, which is so necessary for our hospitalized premature infants. This Golden August event brings together our peers who are engaged in this fight and reiterates the need for us to seek food for our babies together, fulfilling our mission to care for people and also to generate knowledge about this cause,” said the president of Santa Casa.

Reinforcing the importance of sustainable actions and strengthening the support network for breastfeeding and milk collection for the Santa Casa Milk Bank, the health secretary of Belém, Rômulo Nina de Azevedo, announced the creation of a human milk collection point, coordinated by the municipal health department.

“The Health Department of Belém joins the breastfeeding cause through guidance to pregnant women served in health units and now reinforcing this partnership between State and Municipality with the creation of a collection room that will operate at the São Brás Market,” he announced.

In addition to the municipal health secretary and the president of Santa Casa, present at the opening were the director of the Health Care Department of Sespa, Ana Paula Reis, who represented the president of the institution, Ivete Gadelha, the coordinator of child health at Sespa, Ana Cristina Guzzo, and pediatrician Vilma Hutim, representative of the Pará Society of Pediatrics.

The seminar continues this afternoon, 26, and during the morning of Wednesday, 27. Among the topics addressed in the lectures are Support for Black Breastfeeding: from ancestry to the present day, the “Culture” of prescribing infant formulas, and the impacts on the climate crisis and on the theme of World Breastfeeding Week: Let’s prioritize breastfeeding: let’s create sustainable support systems.
