Anyone who has visited the 28th Pan-Amazonian Book and Multivoices Fair knows that wherever you look, there are dozens of people wearing a yellow duck in their hair, on their clothes, or on their bags. The little creatures have become a "fever." Known as the "literary duck," the accessory quickly gained popularity and has been a sales success.

The truth is that no one knows exactly how the trend started and what it represents. The wave began at events abroad, arrived in Brazil through success on social media, especially on TikTok, and has already been featured at events like CCXP and Campus Party.

Student Sâmia Paula, 22, also joined the fun. "I saw that everyone was wearing it, and I thought: 'Yeah, I think I'll wear it because it's cute.'

"I came with my aunt and my cousin who is looking for a book, and I saw a lot of people wearing it and thought, I'll join this trend too, I'll put a duck on my head. We thought it was cute, liked it, and bought it," says Valéria Cunha.

Even without knowing exactly what the duck means, the object evokes a sense of belonging and can be kept as a memento of this special and affectionate moment that the Pan-Amazonian Book and Multivoices Fair represents for the people of Pará.

"We participate in several fairs in other states, we just came from the Rio de Janeiro Book Biennial, and there we saw the literary duck and decided to bring it to our state as well. Everyone liked it, including teenagers and teachers, it worked out," says Denise Oliveira, an exhibitor at the Space Book, You Go booth.

"Everyone who sees someone with a duck on their head wants one too, then we say 'It's the literary duck and it's the fair's mascot now.' Many people arrived here curious, wanting to know why this duck, and we explain that it's the literary duck and that it's here to stay," concludes Denise, happy with the sales success.

The 28th edition of the fair features 189 book booths, with 32 publishers, 40 bookstores, and 48 distributors — 70 of them from Pará. In total, there are 90,000 titles available. The estimate is that by the end of the event, around R$ 12 million in business and sales will be generated.

There are more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs during the setup, execution, and dismantling period. The total area of the fair is 10,000 square meters, 100% air-conditioned, occupying Hangar 1 (Event Pavilion) and Hangar 2 (Hall B and Food Court).

In addition to the book booths, the Author's Point, the Artist's Alley, and the Creative Fair are also commercial spaces, especially aimed at valuing cultural and literary production.

The fair runs until August 22, Friday, with free entry and operating hours from 9 AM to 10 PM, with access until 9 PM. Check out the complete schedule here.
