Pride and dedication are key words at the Santa Tereza D'Ávila State High School in Marituba, a municipality in the Metropolitan Region of Belém (RMB), after 17 students won gold, silver, and bronze medals in the 2025 editions of the Brazilian Astronomy Olympiad (OBA) and the Brazilian Rocket Olympiad (Obafog). The school obtained 19 medals, including two golds, four silvers, and three bronzes in the OBA and 10 bronze medals in the Rocket Olympiad, in the categories of highest technical challenge - levels 4 and 2.

Public state school students who stand out in national competitions

In addition to the numbers, what stands out most in the state school's achievement is student protagonism, emphasized Mathematics teacher Charles Ruan, who is responsible for the olympiads at the school. “Today, we have an active interdisciplinary club that has already accumulated more than 50 national medals between 2024 and 2025. This only reinforces the importance of giving voice, space, and encouragement to the student, who is the true protagonist of this journey of achievements,” said the teacher.

International - Now, the nine medalists from the Brazilian Astronomy Olympiad are qualified for the international selections, and eight medalists from Obafog have advanced to the National Rocket Journey, held in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The event brings together the most promising teams in the country.

For student Enzo de Lima, from the 2nd year of high school, who won silver in the OBA and bronze in the Obafog, the result shows that all the effort was rewarded. “It’s cool to study and be rewarded. I worked hard to learn, and I pursued it with a goal. The medal is proof that it was all worth it,” said the student, who already collects medals in other competitions, such as the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (Obmep) and the Direct Treasure Olympiad of Financial Education (Olitef).

For 3rd year high school student Clarice Mendes, gold medalist in the OBA and bronze in the Obafog, the achievement reflects a lot of study and encouragement from the school management. “Winning the bronze medal in the Obafog and the gold medal in the OBA was a unique and remarkable experience in my life. More than recognition, these medals represent all the effort, dedication, and curiosity I have always had for the sciences and the universe. These achievements would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of my school and my family. I want to especially highlight the role of my teacher, Ruan, who, in addition to teaching the content with passion and clarity, always motivated me to go further, to seek more, to believe in my potential,” said the student.
