The commitment of the Government of Pará to a just transition, valuing environmental assets, and building permanent legacies for the Amazonian population was highlighted by Governor Helder Barbalho during the Amazon Climate Week, which takes place from July 14 to 18, bringing together representatives from governments, businesses, civil society, indigenous peoples, and traditional communities to discuss solutions to the environmental, social, and economic challenges of the region. The event is also a preparatory space for the United Nations (UN) World Conference on Climate Change, COP 30, which will be held in November in Belém, promoting networking and strengthening partnerships.

Governor Helder Barbalho advocated for the valuing of science, biodiversity, and the generation of green jobs

“We aim to consolidate Belém and the Amazon as leaders in the climate change agenda and in issues involving the environment. By hosting COP 30, we want to affirm that the discussion about climate must happen here, in the largest tropical forest in the world. The Climate Week positions Belém to value our science, our biodiversity, and generate green jobs, integrating development and sustainability,” stated the governor of Pará.

The day's program also included the participation of authorities and experts, such as Ana Toni, executive director of COP 30, and representatives from national and international organizations involved in the climate agenda.

During the event, the president of Hydro, Anderson Baranov, emphasized the role of the private sector in the energy transition and in building sustainable solutions in partnership with the public sector. “Hydro is a sponsor of the event because we believe that dialogue needs to generate action. Since 2022, we have already invested about 14 billion reais in energy transition, with significant changes in Alunorte's matrix and the use of renewable energy, such as biomass from açaí seeds. The governor has encouraged the holding of events like this, and our goal is to make Climate Week an annual tradition,” said Anderson Baranov.

Mobilization - The founder of the Cojovem Institute, Karla Braga, highlighted the importance of holding climate events in the Amazon, strengthening the participation of the local society. “Climate Weeks usually precede COPs and mobilize society. This one, in particular, is historic: it is the first time we bring this debate so strongly into the Amazonian territory. The Amazon needs to be seen as the center of solutions, but also as a place of active listening, where the people who sustain the forest live,” emphasized Karla Braga.

She also pointed out the progress in discussions about a just transition and the importance of consolidating work plans and proposals for territories like the Amazon, articulating bioeconomy, community tourism, and new low-carbon economies.

Agenda for the future of the climate - With a diverse program that includes panels on primary economies, new economies, territorial structures, and community-based tourism, the 1st Amazon Climate Week seeks to mobilize different sectors around sustainable solutions.

The event also aims to attract investments and consolidate public policies that ensure the conservation of the forest, the well-being of the population, and the presence of the Amazon as a protagonist in the global climate debate.
