An inspection action by the Antônio Lemos River Base, linked to the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup) last Friday (4), resulted in the seizure of 5 tons of fish being transported irregularly on a ferry boat navigating the Tajapuru River in Breves, originating from Manaus (AM).

The Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense, Ualame Machado, reinforces the important inspection strategy in the river network that has guaranteed positive results. "Since the strategic installation of the Antônio Lemos Base located on the Tajapuru River, which is a main route for passenger and cargo vessels, the results have been very positive in combating any type of crime. This time, for example, the irregular transport of 5 tons of pirarucu was immediately detected during an approach to a vessel, constituting an environmental crime. So the action, once again, demonstrates the heightened attention and thorough searches carried out daily, so that any illicit activity is addressed and the population knows that the state, through the security system, remains present in the region, facing crime and ensuring the safety of both those who use these routes and those who live in the area," said the head of Segup.

According to information from the police team, during an approach under the Operation Protector of Borders and Boundaries, on the vessel "Capacidade", which was headed to the capital Belém, the agents began inspecting the vehicles transported on the vessel when they sensed a strong smell typical of salted fish from one of the trailers.

Given the suspicion, the driver of the vehicle was questioned about the cargo and stated that he was only transporting a few kilos for personal consumption. However, when it was determined that he should untie the tarpaulin for material verification, he confessed to carrying 5 tons of salted pirarucu without the necessary documentation. Therefore, the fish and trailer were seized, and along with the driver, were taken to the Civil Police Station of Breves for appropriate procedures under Law 9.605/98 on environmental crimes.

The action was integrated by agents from the Public Security River Group and Military Police from the Environmental Police Battalion and Independent River Police Company.
