General Hospital of Tailândia expands patient care with a humanized approach
The care initiative symbolizes yet another significant advancement in the specialized care offered by the multidisciplinary team of the hospital unit
The management of the General Hospital of Tailândia (HGT) has begun the implementation of humanized palliative care, an initiative aimed at providing comprehensive comfort to patients with life-threatening illnesses, addressing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects, in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO). The care initiative symbolizes yet another significant advancement in the specialized care offered by the multidisciplinary team of the hospital unit.
The first meeting of the committee included the presence of various health professionals, including doctors, nutritionists, nurses, psychologists, and social workers, as well as receptionists, pharmacists, and other professionals. Among the topics discussed were the concept of palliative care, the role of each professional in the process, and the workflows that must be followed to ensure quality assistance to users.
According to the physician and technical director of HGT, Eduardo Rocha, the committee's priority is always the patient and their family. "In the hospital environment, when it is no longer possible to reverse the clinical condition, our attention turns to comfort, dignity, and symptom control. It is essential for the family to know that their loved one is not suffering, that they are not in pain, and that they are not alone in this process," he emphasized.
The manager explains that the committee's work will be activated when any sector identifies a patient in irreversible clinical conditions. "From there, the case will be analyzed by the multidisciplinary team, which will define the care strategies. One of the most important moments of this process is the family conference, where professionals clarify the doubts of the family members."
According to the committee's psychologist, Izabel Alves, this stage is fundamental to ensure transparency and emotional support for families. "Even in such a delicate moment, we always manage to conduct everything harmoniously, as clear communication and support make all the difference," said the professional.
Additionally, it was highlighted that after the family conference, when possible, visits to the patient are allowed, always respecting health restrictions. At this moment, family members can offer prayers and pay tributes to their loved one.
Approval- "I think it is very important for the hospital to have this care. When we see that there is no more hope, what we want is for the person we love not to suffer, to have comfort. This work you are doing here is a relief for families because it brings a little peace to our hearts, knowing that our loved ones are being well cared for until the end," said young Ludmila Silva, 22, who was accompanying her son Yuri Miguel, hospitalized at HGT.
Rocha also emphasized that the Ministry of Health regulates the provision of palliative care as part of the integrated continued care in the SUS. "Strengthening this committee is a fundamental step to improve the care of patients facing life-threatening diseases, as pointed out by the WHO," concluded the manager.
Structure - The General Hospital of Tailândia has 51 beds and maintains an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with nine beds, six for adults and three for pediatrics. Users who depend on the Unified Health System (SUS) have access to the services offered by HGT through the Municipal Regulation Center, and to emergency services on a walk-in basis or referred by Samu, the Military Fire Brigade, and the Highway Police.
Service - HGT belongs to the Government of Pará and is managed by the National Institute of Social and Human Development (INDSH), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa). The unit is located at Avenida Florianópolis, s/n, in the Novo neighborhood. More information can be obtained by phone at (91) 3752.31210.
