State expands infrastructure for sustainable fishing with Monitoring Units
Three units have already been delivered in the municipalities of Breu Branco, Novo Repartimento, and Itupiranga; four more are under construction to qualify the fishing activity
In order to improve the working conditions of fishermen and ensure quality fish for the population, the State Government is investing in the construction of Monitoring and Landing Units for Fish in Pará. Three units, in the municipalities of Breu Branco, Novo Repartimento, and Itupiranga, have already been delivered to the management of the Institute for Forest Development and Biodiversity of Pará (Ideflor-Bio). Three more units, in Jacundá, Nova Ipixuna, and Tucuruí, are under construction, and the municipality of Goianésia do Pará will also be covered by a unit.
“We decided to implement, in the seven municipalities around the Tucuruí lake, fishing monitoring units to check how much fish is being extracted and the fish stock in the area. We want fishing to continue being an extremely important activity for these fishermen, generating income for the population, but it should also be done sustainably, to ensure that in the future, fishermen will have the conditions to use and enjoy the same benefits,” emphasizes the president of Ideflor-Bio, Nilson Pinto.
The project, executed by the State Secretariat for Public Works (Seop), includes warehouses with metal structure roofs, electrical and plumbing installations that are piped, installed, and embedded, as well as a free area, office, restrooms, and storage rooms. The structure is suitable for both landing and storing fish.
Workers highlight better structure - “This warehouse is of great importance for fishermen. I can say that it is the realization of a dream to have such a great structure, to be able to land fish, and to have more clients to buy their products. It’s wonderful,” points out Elisângela Oliveira, president of the Z-53 fishermen's colony of Breu Branco. In March of this year, the first unit was delivered in the municipality of Breu Branco, in the Integration Region of Tucuruí Lake, southeastern Pará.
The monitoring of fish will be one of the main functions of the Units, integrating the collected data into the Monitoring System of the Conservation Units of Ideflor-Bio (SisMULT). In addition to fostering the local economy, the initiative also strengthens the sustainability of water resources.
Manager of the Administrative Region of the Tucuruí Lake Mosaic of Ideflor-Bio, Keylah Borges, emphasizes the transformation for the better of the working conditions of fishermen. “Without a doubt, the fish landing posts will provide greater quality in the work of fishermen. Many of them worked landing fish in the open air, in a tiring way. With the new physical structure of the port, they will have more infrastructure, with proper tables, more hygiene, high-precision scales, items that will facilitate handling,” she assures.
Walter da Silva, a fisherman from the Tucuruí Lake region, comments on the importance of the initiative for promoting local trade. “Our income from selling fish stays within the region itself because we make this money circulate right here, and that warms up the economy,” he concludes.
