The working team from the secretary established partnerships to implement field actions for the recognition of the GIs with the National Institute of Industrial Property

The State Secretary of Agricultural Development and Fisheries (Sedap) sent a working team to Santarém from the 23rd to the 26th, which established partnerships to implement field actions for the recognition with the National Institute of Industrial Property (Inpi) of the Geographical Indication (GI) of Santarém for pirarucu, feijão manteiguinha, and Arapiuns braids.
Responding to the demands of fishermen, family farmers, and artisans, the visit had a busy agenda and included, among other activities, a meeting with the city hall and with the municipal secretaries of Agriculture, Tourism, and Culture; with representatives from the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company of the State of Pará (Emater) and with the regional team from Sedap.
The coordinator of the Geographical Indication and Collective Brands Incentive Program of the State of Pará (Law 10.510/2024), agronomist Dr. Márcia Tagore, reveals the outcome of the meeting with the local government. "In the meeting with the secretaries of Agriculture, Bruno Costa, of Tourism, Emanuel Leite, and of Culture, Priscila Teixeira, and field teams, a partnership was agreed for future activities of field trips and hiring specialized consultancy for documentation gathering," she notes.
The agenda included visits to the handicraft space in Santarém, Cristo Rei; a meeting with the feijão manteiguinha producer, Luciana Santos, from the Cucurunã community, Cajutuba II road; a meeting with fishermen, representatives of the communities that manage pirarucu, in Santa Maria do Tapará; as well as a visit to the facilities of the Agricultural Unit (Uagro) Santa Cruz and the NGO Sapopema, which works with the communities managing pirarucu.
GI of pirarucu - The president of the Regional Fishing Council of Tapará, Rionaldo Pereira, participated in the meeting in the Santa Maria community. "We are very happy because, with a lot of work, we are close to our goal, which is to achieve the geographical indication for our region of Tapará and Santarém. We felt in the meeting that the communities are ready to carry out this project, so I want to thank Sedap, Emater, and Semap who went with us there, to provide information and listen to the fishermen," he emphasizes.

GI of feijão manteiguinha - The rural extension worker from Emater, Francisco Chaves, works on promoting the Geographical Indication of feijão manteiguinha. "The indication will be a significant reality for our municipality and the Lower Amazon region because this bean was the result of a genetic mutation that occurred centuries ago, and the people who fed on this product in the floodplains of Santarém believed it gave them strength to work, so this Geographical Indication will be a seal of this product so desired by us and consumed throughout Brazil," he highlights.
Responsible for the visit - The technicians responsible for fulfilling the agenda were: the coordinator of the GI and Collective Brands Program, Enga. Agra. Dr. Márcia Tagore, accompanied by Pedagogue Amanda Souza, Aquaculture Coordinator, Eng. of Fishing Alan Pragana, Eng. of Fishing Thiago Cruz, Eng. of Fishing Fábio Tourão, in addition to the regional representatives of SEDAP, Agronomist Eng. Otávio Macedo, Zacarias Oliveira, and Dani Silva, who provided local support, and Emater extensionists Francisco Chaves, José Ávila, Lorena Silva, Idivaldo Ganboa, and Ângela de Jesus. The visit agenda is expected to continue over the coming months.
