Inspection by the Antônio Lemos Base seizes over 24 cubic meters of irregular wood
The cargo was being transported on a barge stopped by the police, without the documentation required by law. The total fines exceeded R$ 20,000.
Action by the Integrated River Base Antônio Lemos, linked to the State Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), resulted in the seizure of 24.25 cubic meters of sawn wood, of an unidentified species, transported without the documentation required by law. The seizure occurred on Thursday (19), as part of Operation "Protector of Borders and Boundaries", in the municipality of Breves, in the Marajó Integration Region.
The material was found during a morning inspection of the pushboat "Capitão José Guilherme I" and three barges transporting people, cargo, and vehicles. The integrated inspection noticed a trailer with the sawn wood, whose license was in violation of legal norms, infringing the Environmental Crimes Law and State Law No. 9,575/2022, which establishes the environmental administrative process for investigating conduct and activities that cause damage to the environment, and defines the application of sanctions.
According to the acting State Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense, Colonel PM Sérgio Neves, "the constant and vigilant presence of the bases in our rivers and riverine areas has been decisive in curbing a wide range of illegal practices, from drug and arms trafficking to the illegal exploitation of natural resources. The results achieved demonstrate the commitment and effectiveness of our agents, who, even under challenging conditions, ensure the protection of our territory and the safety of our population."

Seizure – In light of the irregularities, a Seizure Term and a Wood Deposit Term were drawn up, in addition to a fine of R$ 6,540.75 imposed on the vessel's operator. The penalty was determined based on the environmental infractions verified by the agents.
The company responsible for the transport was fined R$ 7,267.50, and the company owning the cargo received a fine of R$ 6,540.75, totaling R$ 20,349.00. The vessel's commander was made a faithful depositary and was warned that he could not sell, lend, or use the mentioned goods, ensuring their good state of conservation, being responsible for any possible damage until the final decision of the competent authority.
Operation "Protector of Borders and Boundaries" is coordinated by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, in partnership with state agencies, and aims to intensify the fight against cross-border and environmental crimes in hard-to-reach areas, such as the Amazon river network.
