At Policlínica Carajás, telemedicine shortens distances and brings specialized care
Service connects patients to doctors, ensuring care and agility in humanized assistance
Policlínica Carajás Miguel Chamon, in Marabá, expands the population's access to specialized health through telemedicine. In addition to in-person consultations, the unit offers remote care in specialties that are hard to access in the region, connecting patients from southeastern Pará to doctors. The service ensures more agility, comfort, and quality in health care.
Aurora Silva, 4 years old, a resident of Brejo Grande do Araguaia, was one of the benefited patients. With allergic crises, she was attended by a pediatric allergist. Jaqueline Silva, the girl's mother, approved the care. "The doctor attended us well, evaluated my daughter's condition properly, and requested tests to better understand the situation. The connection was great, and having a doctor present in the clinic with us gave a lot of security. It felt like an in-person consultation," Jaqueline said.
In addition to pediatric allergy care, Policlínica also offers, through telemedicine, consultations in pediatric hematology, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric cardiology, pediatric nephrology, and adult endocrinology.
Priscila Santos, the unit's service leader, emphasizes that the team's preparation is essential to ensure the quality of the service. "Our role is to guide patients on how the care works, explain each step of the process, and ensure they feel welcomed and safe throughout the consultation," she highlighted.
Telemedicine
For the executive director of Policlínica, Joabe Lopes, telemedicine is essential to bring quality health to those living far from specialized centers, reducing inequalities. "With technology, we can connect patients to highly qualified professionals without them needing to travel long distances. This not only brings more comfort and agility to those needing care but also expands access to health, ensuring a more humanized and efficient care," concluded Joabe.
The offices of Policlínica are equipped with appropriate technology for consultations, ensuring clear and efficient communication. During remote care, the patient is accompanied by a local doctor, who assists in the evaluation and relays information to the specialist, ensuring an accurate diagnosis and humanized care.
For the Secretary of State for Public Health, Ivete Gadelha Vaz, the initiative is a strategic advance in the regionalization of assistance. "The interiorization of specialized health is a priority of our management, and telemedicine has been a fundamental ally in this process. With it, we can shorten distances and ensure that patients from the interior have access to highly qualified professionals, with quality and humanization. The experience at Policlínica Carajás is a concrete example of how technology can transform people's lives, bringing specialized care to those who need it most, close to home and with all safety," said the head of Sespa.
Established in Brazil in 2020, telemedicine allows doctors to conduct consultations, diagnoses, monitoring, and follow-up of patients remotely, using secure technologies. Confidentiality, privacy, data security, and patient consent must be guaranteed, in addition to complying with the same ethical and technical principles of in-person medicine.
Regulation - The services are regulated by the State Regulation Center, linked to Sespa. To access the services, citizens must seek a Basic Health Unit (UBS), obtain a referral, and present it at the Municipal Health Department of their city, which will register and schedule with Policlínica.
Structure: Policlínica Carajás is a reference in specialized health for 17 municipalities in Southeastern Pará. The unit offers care in more than 25 medical specialties and performs over 20 types of medium and high complexity exams. The institution also performs low-complexity surgical procedures. All care is 100% free, through the Unified Health System (SUS), focusing on humanization.
