The State School Professor Ruth dos Santos Almeida, in Belém, held a special morning in celebration of World Environment Day on Thursday (5). The focus was on environmental awareness and the importance of sustainable actions. The event included a series of activities that highlighted the protagonism of students and collective responsibility in the face of climate change.

With the theme focused on the importance of collective responsibility in the face of climate change, the event brought together students, teachers, and school managers in a moment of reflection and learning. The opening ceremony was conducted by the school's management team, which emphasized the importance of each citizen's role in preserving the environment and building a more sustainable future for all.

One of the most anticipated moments was the Sustainable Fashion show, with students showcasing clothes made from recyclable materials. Besides being visually impactful, the creations reinforced the importance of reusing materials and conscious consumption, concepts that are increasingly necessary in the current context of environmental crisis.

Teacher Lívina Botão, from the English Language curriculum component, brought to the program the project "Green Voices: Raising Awareness for Our Planet," and engaged students in reflections on the connection between the English language, globalization, and environmental challenges. The students shared their research and work in English, addressing global sustainability themes and linking local environmental discussions with international debates.

"I found today's event enlightening. Many people were not aware of our project at the school itself and were happy with the presentation. As a presenter, it was gratifying to see our work reaching all classes and encouraging a new way of thinking. Many wanted to take seedlings from our medicinal garden to plant at home, which shows this impact. As a student, I also enjoyed it: I got closer to my friends and connected better with everyone. It was a very positive experience," says Artur Silva de Souza, a first-year high school student.

Still within the pedagogical proposal of the English Language, exhibitions of posters, videos, and bilingual thematic rooms were held, addressing local and global environmental issues, with a focus on COP 30, which will be hosted in Belém in 2025. The works displayed the critical and communicative capacity of the students, who articulated content and language clearly and engagingly.

"My participation as an English teacher was to show the influence of the English language as a universal language, especially in science and the dissemination of knowledge. Our project was called Green Voices: Race and Readiness for Your Planet, and it was very gratifying to see the students' involvement. They dedicated themselves a lot, addressed sustainability-related themes, and presented very well-developed works. We are very happy and grateful for this experience," said Lívina Botão, English teacher.

Throughout the morning, students also presented environmental education projects that have been developed at the school during the first semester of 2025. Among them, the initiatives of School Garden, Medicinal Garden, Composting, Green Chemistry, Eco-Chemistry in Action, and Doing My Part stand out. These activities integrate the school curriculum with environmental practices, promoting interdisciplinarity and allowing students to take the lead in the search for sustainable solutions.

In another space, painting workshops and mask production with recyclable materials engaged students, in addition to interactive activities in mathematics and environmental education, which stimulated creativity and collaborative work among participants.

To conclude the activities, students from the early years of schooling presented a panel on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting how the projects developed at the school align with these goals and contribute to the formation of more conscious citizens committed to social and environmental transformation.

Mandatory curriculum component - Since the first semester of 2024, the State Department of Education (Seduc) has implemented the Environmental Education curriculum component as a mandatory subject at all stages of education in state schools. The measure is part of the Environmental Education, Sustainability, and Climate Policy and can also be adopted by municipalities.

The inclusion of the subject makes Pará a pioneer in implementing a mandatory curricular content focused on sustainability. The initiative reinforces students' engagement in strategic themes for the region's future, especially with the approach of COP30, the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, which will be hosted in Belém in November 2025.
