Oriximiná Hospital strengthens Yellow May campaign for traffic accident prevention
Initiative against accidents on the roads of western Pará is one of the ways the state government hospital contributes to safer traffic
The Regional Hospital of Oriximiná Menino Jesus (HRMJ) has recorded a high demand for care for traffic accident victims, a reality that raises an important alert this May, when the national Yellow May campaign takes place. The initiative aims to raise awareness in society about the risks of recklessness on the roads and the need to adopt safer behaviors on public roads.
Among the recent cases attended by the unit is that of fisherman José Aliuson da Silva de Oliveira, 48, a resident of Alenquer. "I was going to a fishermen's meeting in the Cuiepeua community when another motorcyclist hit me on the road. I fractured my arm and lost two teeth," reported the victim.
Another serious accident involved Arildo Chaves de Souza, 49, from Porto Trombetas. "I had just finished work and was heading to the municipality of Faro. Since it had rained a lot, the road was slippery. I fell into a hole and fractured my leg," he said.
According to orthopedic surgeon Roque Sales, traffic accidents represent a serious public health problem, overloading emergency services and generating long-term consequences.
"We treat young people with multiple fractures, adults with spinal injuries, and elderly people with multiple traumas. These individuals become living statistics of violence on the roads," the doctor warned.
According to Dr. Roque Sales, data from the Ministry of Health, via the Datasus platform, indicate that traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of hospitalizations in the country. "Our hospital is a reference in orthopedics and traumatology and exclusively serves SUS users. We have been working to ensure quick and efficient treatment for victims," he highlighted.
Yellow May Campaign
The Yellow May campaign mobilizes health professionals, educators, and public managers in promoting preventive actions. For Dr. Roque Sales, health professionals play a fundamental role as awareness agents. "We must encourage the use of seat belts, respect for speed limits, not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and protecting motorcyclists and pedestrians. These simple actions save lives," he emphasized.
According to him, the most frequent accidents — such as car collisions, motorcycle falls, run-overs, and rollovers — result in exposed fractures, spinal trauma, amputations, and severe joint injuries, often with permanent physical sequelae and lasting psychological suffering.
About the hospital
Operating for seven months, the Regional Hospital of Oriximiná Menino Jesus has already reached approximately 20,800 attendances. The unit has 26 inpatient and ICU beds, in addition to 16 emergency care beds, and offers laboratory and imaging tests. The hospital serves in seven medical specialties: anesthesiology, cardiology, general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, traumatology, and intensive medicine.
The general director of the unit, Katyuscia Braga, emphasizes that the hospital is prepared to serve the local population with agility and humanization. "Our focus is to provide excellent care, especially in trauma cases. The team acts quickly and effectively to ensure patient recovery," she stated.
With the reinforcement of awareness actions for Yellow May and the specialized work of HRMJ, it is expected to reduce the impacts of traffic violence in the western region of Pará.
