The Public Regional Hospital of Marajó (HRPM), in Breves, restructured the internal flow of the surgical centers, promoting greater integration between medical and nursing teams. The management strategy resulted in increased productivity and enhanced safety of procedures, allowing the Hospital to exceed the contractual target of 355 surgeries and perform 446, almost 100 more than expected in April.

Among the actions, the reorganization of surgical schedules according to medical routines, expanded reception for the clinical staff and nursing team, and increased bed turnover through internal strategies of hospital management stand out. In addition, the institution reinforced the continuous support of senior management for surgical demands, prioritizing resolution and the reduction of cancellations, which directly contributed to the record number of surgeries performed.

“With the reorganization of the priority schedules of each medical specialty and the expanded reception provided to the teams based on the guidelines of the Executive Director, Jusciely Machado, we increased our operational capacity, which led to increased productivity, without compromising the hospital infection rate and with synergistic care to patient care protocols, which were further valued by the entire team. We increased bed turnover based on the commitment of the clinical staff, reduced the average length of stay, and advanced in expanding access to health for Marajó II,” emphasizes Dr. Marcello Ferreira, Technical Director of HRPM.

He adds that, with the measures implemented, the internal waiting list for gallbladder surgeries (cholecystectomy), the current highest demand, reduced from November to August. “We hope to reduce it even further, counting on the support of the State Department of Public Health (Sespa) and the multiprofessional teams of our hospital unit,” adds the manager.

Safety - Maria Iza Gonçalves, nurse from the Patient Quality and Safety Center (NQSP), explains that to ensure care safety, each patient is directed according to a specific flow that considers the nature of the procedure (elective or urgent), with documentation, exams, and pre-anesthetic evaluations organized in advance. Safety barriers are applied at all stages, such as checklists, training, and continuous monitoring by the nursing team, including actions in the ICU, surgical center, and post-operative care.

“These protocols work in an integrated manner, ensuring comprehensive care. Even in orthopedic procedures, the Hospital assesses additional risks, such as falls and pressure injuries, with specific scales and measures. Patient identification is rigorously checked at all times, and surgical prophylaxis is closely monitored by the infection control team,” informs Maria Iza Gonçalves.

HRPM intensified infection control strategies for surgical patients, emphasizing the safety of the new surgical center flow. The nurse from the Hospital Infection Control Commission (CCIH), Higor Tostes, highlights that among the actions are the active search for patients at higher risk of infection, monitoring of discharges, control of antibiotic prophylaxis, validation of sterilization processes, and case discussions with the medical team.

“Recent measures include reinforcing pre-operative bathing for elective surgeries on the same day and screening patients with suspected previous infections, ensuring more effective care,” adds Higor Tostes.

Approval - One of the satisfied users of the services is Gilmar Machado dos Santos, 35, who underwent a surgical procedure. He comments that he noticed the humanization in the reception and responsibility of the professionals, who treated him well throughout the process. “The professionals give all the attention to the patients. I felt safe, as the Hospital has trained professionals to provide care. I would recommend the services, especially since it is free care, offered by the Unified Health System (SUS), which has excellent professionals,” assures the rural worker.

Between January and April 2025, the Marajó Regional performed 1,523 surgical procedures.

The HRPM is a health unit of the State Government, managed by the National Institute of Social and Human Development (INDSH), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa). The Hospital provides medium and high complexity assistance in the southwestern Marajó region and is located at Avenida Rio Branco, No. 1,266, in downtown Breves.
