The Cultural Foundation of Pará (FCP) delivered around 18,000 books to the State Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration (Seap) on the morning of this Tuesday (29), which will be used to expand the collection of 44 prison libraries in the State of Pará.

Each of them will receive 400 new literary works written by authors from Pará, totaling 16,600 new titles in the reading locations located in eleven integration regions of Pará. In this stage, only the Marajó region will not be reached.

The delivery of the collections was made by the president of the Cultural Foundation of Pará, Thiago Miranda, during a ceremony held at the Women's Reeducation Center (CRF) in Ananindeua.

"We are very happy to have this opportunity to deliver works from Pará, from Pará publishers, strengthening our literary culture. This time also including prison libraries. Reading is certainly one of the great doors to change our future. Here we also have the opportunity to see people transform their lives through reading," emphasized the President of the Cultural Foundation of Pará, Thiago Miranda.

For the director of social reintegration, Valber Duarte, the partnership with the Cultural Foundation of Pará was essential for the implementation of the reading project. In addition, he emphasizes that the donation of books represents a way of democratizing access to reading for these people deprived of liberty and a way of reintegrating them into society. "The Cultural Foundation has been a fundamental partner. Reading is a right provided for in the Penal Execution Law, and initiatives like this make access possible for people in situations of high vulnerability. Reading not only enriches culturally but also contributes to the remission of the sentence. It is an instrument of transformation and social reintegration," highlighted Duarte.

Certificates - In addition to the books, on this Tuesday, the FCP certified 40 detainees who participated in the reader training workshop for people deprived of liberty, held over the past year by the Foundation.

Catarina Alcântara, one of the detainees who received the certificate from the workshop, says that participating in the project was enriching both culturally and intellectually.

With less than a year left to leave the Women's Reeducation Center (CRF), Catarina says she is eager to start a new life and to introduce her daughters to the world of reading.

"When I read, it is the moment I say I am free. Participating in the workshop was a way to enrich my repertoire and expand my perspectives for the future. I say, reading is essential for us, it is indeed a form of escape. I had contact with reading outside, but I learned to value it much more after being here," she concludes.
