A study on the Patient Safety Brochure of the Octávio Lobo Children's Oncology Hospital (Hoiol), in Belém, won first place at the Amazonian Award for Best Practices in Patient Safety. The award was presented last Saturday (26), during the III Amazonian Congress on Safe Patient Care (Coamasp), in the capital of Pará.

Entitled “The Use of a Light-Heavy Technology for Raising Awareness of Patients and Companions on Patient Safety in a Reference Hospital for Pediatric Oncology Care,” the scientific work is authored by Dociana Formigosa, Jade Durans, Sara Castro, and Williane Melo.

The award was presented to the authors of the work present at the event - Sara Castro, Jade Durans, and Dociana Formigosa

The Octávio Lobo Children's Oncology Hospital is a High Complexity Unit in Oncology (Unacon), dedicated to differential and definitive diagnosis, and specialized treatment of all types of cancer affecting the child and adolescent population, serving children and adolescents from 0 to 19 years old. The health unit is managed by the Institute Diretrizes (ID), under a management contract with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa).

The Patient Safety Brochure of Hoiol was developed in 2023 by professionals from the Patient Quality and Safety Center and Communication. Since the project's inception, the brochure aims to improve patient adherence to the protocols recommended by the Ministry of Health (MS) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Humanization team uses the brochure as a sensitization tool

Engagement - Co-author of the awarded summary, the general director of Hoiol, Sara Castro, explained that the brochure guides professionals, managers, users, and their families on good safety practices. “Our commitment is to ensure that everyone is well-informed and engaged in promoting quality care. The brochure helps us in this promotion of knowledge, making the hospital environment increasingly safe,” said the manager.

The document also includes some important instruments, such as the international patient safety goals: identification; effective communication; safety in medication use; safe surgery; hand hygiene; prevention of pressure injuries and fall prevention.

“The approach to the goals is an essential strategy, as they serve as practical guidelines to promote safe and standardized care within the Hospital. Defined by the WHO, these guidelines are widely adopted by institutions seeking to ensure quality and safety in health services,” said the Quality Coordinator of Hoiol, Dociana Formigosa.

In addition to the printed brochure, professionals, users, and companions can access the digital version of the brochure

Sensitization - The implementation of the brochure's use is supported by the Humanization team, which visits patients in their beds since triage and instructs users and their legal guardians on the correct use of the tool. The presentation of the material is done in a playful manner, which contributes to improving the patient's experience in the care process. In addition to the physical version, the brochure is available online and can be accessed via QR Code in the wards and common areas of the Octávio Lobo Hospital.

In 2024, the use of the brochure was evaluated through a questionnaire applied to professionals, users, and companions. The indicator showed 94% adherence to patient safety protocols, exceeding the pre-established goal of 80%.

Held on the 25th and 26th of this month, the III Coamasp brought together academics, specialists, and health professionals to address the theme “Education and Awareness for Safe Patient Care in the Amazon: A Focus on COP 30 with the Use of Technology and Sustainability.”

For the Quality Analyst of Hoiol, Jade Durans, the presentation and recognition of the work were “a unique, enriching experience.” “Scientific events allow for an exchange of knowledge and successful experiences between institutions, which can be used to improve safe patient care in health units. The award shows that we are on the right track,” she added.
