Guamá Science and Technology Park promotes composting and sustainable cultivation workshop
20 spots will be allocated for residents around the Science and Technology Park. Classes will start on November 29.
The Guamá Science and Technology Park (PCT) in Belém is holding the Composting and Organic Garden Workshop, an initiative aimed at promoting citizen science, social innovation, and sustainable development with the surrounding community of the complex, located in the Guamá neighborhood. 20 spots will be offered for adults and seniors.
The workshop will be conducted in four modules: the first on Composting and Waste Collection; the second will cover Soil Preparation; the third will address Garden Implementation, and the last will deal with Pest Management and Identification of Bioactives. Activities will be held every 15 days. At the end, students will receive certificates. The first module will take place on November 29 (Saturday).
The goal is to train participants in domestic composting techniques for transforming organic waste into high-quality fertilizer; teach the principles of organic/agroecological agriculture, including soil preparation, planting, pest management, and harvesting, applicable in small spaces such as pots, raised beds, and backyards, and also promote the physical and mental well-being of participants, strengthening social and community ties by creating spaces for interaction and knowledge exchange, generating a sense of belonging among residents and the PCT Guamá.
Popularization of science - The training will utilize the technical and practical knowledge of the resident laboratories of PCT Guamá to foster the circular economy and contribute to food security and the well-being of the population, transforming participants into knowledge multipliers. “Composting is an educational and strategic action, and through this workshop, we are getting closer to the surrounding community, which is the audience we are seeking. We consider it extremely important for the popularization of the actions that occur here within the Park and for social education,” emphasizes João Weyl, president of the Guamá Foundation, which manages the Park.
The project is a strategic action aimed at integrating the scientific and technological knowledge generated within the PCT with the reality of the surrounding residents, promoting sustainable development and reinforcing a model of Citizen Science, where participants act as active collaborators and producers of knowledge.
The initiative directly contributes to the circular economy by transforming household organic waste into fertilizer. In the social sphere, it promotes food security, allowing participants to produce their own organic food.
The workshop will be taught by invited specialists and by Composta Belém, a startup associated with PCT Guamá, which works in the management of organic waste through composting, production of fertilizers and natural biofertilizers, as well as the use of available natural resources, urban pruning, foliage, sawdust, and dry matter.
“Leading the Composting Workshop reaffirms the purpose that drives Composta: to teach to transform, and to transform to regenerate. It is in education that the impact flourishes,” says Samantha Chaar, CEO of the company.
