The Amazônia+10 Initiative, formed by the State Foundations for Research Support (FAPs), presented, this Thursday, 20, at the Amazônia Sempre Station, at the Goeldi Museum, during COP30, a set of results that reinforce the advancement of science, technology, and innovation in the Legal Amazon. In just three years of operation, the program has already mobilized R$ 162 million and consolidates itself as the largest coordinated effort of scientific funding aimed at the region.

Created to support a fair and sustainable transition in the Amazon, the initiative brings together 25 Brazilian FAPs, 10 international partners, and 61 funded projects, directly involving more than 1,900 researchers, distributed across 171 institutions in Brazil and abroad.

One of the participating researchers in the Initiative, archaeologist Helena Lima, took part in the program and emphasized that the Amazônia+10 Initiative represents an innovative and strategic movement for science in the region. For her, the holding of the panel during COP30 demonstrates that society recognizes the importance of scientific research in the Amazon.

“Seeing Amazonian scientists presenting their results to a broad audience reinforces the prominence of the science produced in the region. This approach between researchers, managers, and funders strengthens the construction of more efficient calls for proposals and programs. This open dialogue, between those who do science on the ground, those who operate in the territories, and those who manage resources, expands the possibilities for structural investments in research in the Amazon,” she evaluates.

During the panel, the president of Fapespa and member of the executive committee of the Initiative, Marcel Botelho, highlighted the relevance of the Initiative for science in the Amazon. “Today we carried out an extremely important action here at Goeldi, the presentation of the report of the three years of the Amazônia +10 Initiative. This is a joint effort involving 25 of the 27 FAPs in the country, as well as French Guiana and various international partners, such as UKRI, ByLight, and institutions from Switzerland. The event had significant participation from researchers, representatives of the IDB, and various strategic actors, who positively evaluated the results presented.”

Scientific production - In two years, the projects supported by Amazônia+10 have already accumulated more than 365 scientific results, including articles, theses, dissertations, books, documentaries, and patents. Twelve projects have a direct impact on public policies, contributing to environmental, social, and health actions in Amazonian territories.

For Botelho, the numbers presented reinforce that Amazônia+10 inaugurates a new model of scientific cooperation, based on collaboration, territorial integration, and strengthening the production of knowledge in the region itself.

With significant results and broad participation from institutions and researchers, the initiative consolidates itself as a milestone for Amazonian science and as a reference in addressing climate, environmental, and social challenges. On the occasion, the scientific director of Fapespa highlighted that the monitoring of the 61 funded projects already reveals a significant set of data and impacts.

“In total, there are already almost two thousand researchers involved and more than eight thousand people participating in academic and non-academic actions. And the results include academic and non-academic productions and the advancement of technological and social solutions that reinforce the importance of continuous funding for science, technology, and innovation in the Amazon. The Initiative enables the prominence of researchers from the region, the value of nature-based solutions, and the recognition of ancestral knowledge.”

Medrado announced that the Amazônia +10 Initiative is already aligning new partnerships and is preparing, for next year, the Challenges in the Amazon call for proposals, which will focus on concrete problems of urban and traditional communities, with attention to the productive chains of the Legal Amazon and the strengthening of local science.

Also on the occasion, the census monitoring conducted between 2022 and 2025 was presented, which gathers information from 1,265 researchers, equivalent to 66% of all those involved in the projects. The survey outlines an updated panorama of science in the region and highlights its diversity.

“We need to deeply understand the region, its population, and its bioeconomic potential, and that is exactly what the initiative has been promoting. Only through Fapespa, there are already 61 supported projects, adding to many other initiatives fostered by institutions from all over Brazil, under the coordination of CONFAP. Now, we look forward to the new programs planned for next year. In the post-COP30 period, we will have many challenges and structural actions to ensure that Pará continues to advance in the right direction,” Botelho informed.

Among the main results:
 • 52.8% of researchers are women;
 • 57% of scholarship holders self-declare as black, brown, or indigenous;
 • 43% were born in the Legal Amazon;
 • Participation of researchers in all Federation units and in seven countries;
 • Involvement of 133 Scientific and Technological Institutions (ICTs).
