Focusing on the expansion of public policies aimed at environmental conservation and strengthening rural communities, the municipality of Santarém reaffirmed, this Tuesday (18), its commitment to sustainability in an institutional meeting with the Forest Development and Biodiversity Institute of the State of Pará (Ideflor-Bio), in Belém.

The Santarém delegation, led by Mayor José Maria Tapajós, included the presence of the Secretary of the Environment, Vânia Portela, and the Secretary of Planning, Management, Development, Industry, Commerce, Innovation, and Technology, Michell Martins. They were received by the Management Advisor of Ideflor-Bio, Lena Pinto, who presented the main ongoing projects in Baixo Amazonas and discussed new fronts of technical cooperation between the municipality and the Institute.

“Santarém is experiencing a strategic moment of territorial planning, and integration with the State Government agencies is essential for us to advance in long-term environmental policies,” highlighted Mayor José Maria Tapajós.

Environmental education as a priority

One of the main highlights of the meeting was the strengthening of actions carried out by the Regional Office of Baixo Amazonas I, based in Santarém. The office has been permanently active in municipal and state schools, with actions of planting seedlings, educational workshops, and raising awareness about the importance of forest conservation.

Among the projects in the implementation phase is the Pedagogical Nursery, which will serve as a practical training space for students, focusing on the recovery of degraded areas, sustainable agriculture, and seedling production.

“The Pedagogical Nursery will be a strategic tool to stimulate youth leadership in socio-environmental issues. We want children and adolescents to experience, in practice, nature-based solutions,” explained Lena Pinto.

Support for family farming

In addition to environmental education initiatives, Ideflor-Bio also reinforced technical support for family farmers in the region. In Santarém, the Institute is working on the implementation of Agroforestry Systems (SAFs), the distribution of seedlings and inputs, integrating environmental conservation and sustainable production.

These actions aim to improve food security, generate income in the countryside, and promote the conscious use of natural resources, especially in the more vulnerable areas of the municipal territory.

At the end of the meeting, the City Hall and Ideflor-Bio reaffirmed their commitment to maintain and expand joint projects, focusing on structuring results for the sustainable development of the western region of Pará.
