COP30: Pará stands out in the Brazil Pavilion with the reduction of deforestation and wildfires
The Curupira and Amazônia Viva operations, along with the work of integrated river bases, were presented in the panel on Security in the Amazon
The results of the actions taken by the Government of Pará that ensured a 60% reduction in deforestation and an 85% decrease in wildfire hotspots in the state were the main case presented in the panel "Plano Amas: Amazon Security and Sovereignty" at the Brazil Pavilion of the Blue Zone of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30). The exhibition, held this Wednesday (12), was led by the Secretary of State for Public Security and Social Defense, Ualame Machado.
The panel brought together authorities and experts to discuss strategies to combat environmental crimes and strengthen security in the Amazon region. Also participating were the president of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Aloizio Mercadante, who addressed investments in the region and the role of the Amazon Fund, and the director of the Amazon and Environment of the Federal Police, Humberto Freire.
Integrated security in the Amazon
During the presentation, Secretary Ualame Machado highlighted Pará's leadership in combating illegal deforestation and environmental crimes, based on the Curupira and Amazônia Viva operations. "These are actions whose strategies are based on intelligence, integration, and investments. Pará has a very particular geography, and our action plan involves both the public security system and environmental agencies," he emphasized.
In the fight against drug trafficking, the head of Segup presented the work developed at the integrated river bases Antônio Lemos and Candiru, installed on Marajó Island and in the western region of the state, which resulted in the seizure of two tons of drugs in just the first half of this year.
A third river base is nearing completion and will be implemented near Abaetetuba, in the integration region of Baixo Tocantins.
The initiatives of Pará were recognized by the Brazilian Forum on Public Security. "The integrated river bases and the Curupira operation are examples of effective actions that have taken Pará to a new level in combating deforestation and wildfires. We come to share this experience so that other states and countries can adopt similar strategies and Pará can be an example for everyone," reinforced Ualame Machado.
