Operation 'Curupira Mirim' stands out in panel promoted by the Ministry of Tourism at COP30
Operation coordinated by Segup focused on raising awareness against sexual crimes involving children and adolescents in commercial establishments and the hotel network in the capital and Marajó
The Public Security and Social Defense Secretariat (Segup), through the Directorate of Public Policies and Social Prevention (DPS), participated on the morning of this Wednesday (12) in the panel promoted by the Ministry of Tourism, in the Green Zone - a meeting space for civil society, institutions, and global leaders related to COP30 - which addressed the theme "Responsible tourism: A tool for prevention against exploitation and violence at large events," with a highlight on the operation "Curupira Mirim," which acted in the prevention of sexual exploitation crimes and child trafficking.
The actions coordinated by Segup focused on the preparation for the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), in commercial establishments, such as bars and restaurants, both in the capital and in establishments in the Combu island region, in Belém.
Panel participant and exhibitor of actions against crimes against children and adolescents, the director of Public Policies and Social Prevention of Segup, Ariane Santos, emphasized the ongoing work of security in Pará, through the operation "Curupira Mirim," which started in the Marajó region and was extended during the preparation for COP30.
"We presented the operation 'Curupira Mirim,' which works in the prevention of sexual exploitation against children and adolescents in the context of COP30. This operation developed with the help of various partners, such as public security agents; civil society; the justice system, with the aim of guaranteeing the rights of children and adolescents. To this end, we provided information to the hotel network, bars, restaurants, taxi associations, and public transport, raising awareness about the importance of reporting suspected cases of any type of sexual exploitation to the Military Police and also to security channels, through which anonymous reports can be made, thus contributing to the actions against these types of crimes. We addressed, with these merchants and service providers, their responsibility in occurrences of this type of event. We also discussed the code of conduct that the Ministry of Tourism provides to hotel owners and lodging establishments, making a real task force so that we could have a COP prioritizing children and adolescents, which is what should be done," said Ariane Santos.
The representative of the Ministry of Justice at the panel, Carolina Fávero, highlighted the actions developed by the operation and the partnerships between institutions and federal and state agencies in combating child sexual exploitation at large events.
"Today, we had a special panel here at COP30 to talk about the prevention of sexual exploitation of children and adolescents at large events. This is very important to show all the planning and work that were done before COP. We can explore and learn more about the operation 'Curupira Mirim,' which was presented today at the panel. This was an integrated operation with various ministries, with partnerships from the Public Security Secretariat of Pará, where we acted in various locations in Belém, in the surroundings, and also in the Marajó region. We also had actions with the Mondó Institute, which did a protective business work with Sebrae. We also dealt with the representative of Childhood Brazil, who also brought a bit of the experience of large events that Brazil has had, and what was done here at COP30, such as prevention actions, with local actors, training so that they know how to identify a possible criminal conduct and how they can seek help and whom to call, what to do in situations where children and adolescents may be exposed to vulnerable situations," said Carolina Fávero.
Panel guests included Carolina Veloso from the Mondó Institute; Eva Dengler from Childhood Brazil; and Marie Ferreira from the Dom José Luís Azcona Institute in Recife.
Operation “Curupira Mirim”
The action integrates strategies for the prevention and confrontation of sexual exploitation and trafficking of children and adolescents in Pará, with effective action in commercial establishments, which received technical visits with the distribution of informative material and guidance on identifying and reporting situations of violence involving children and adolescents. The action primarily focuses on riverside communities and areas of greater social vulnerability, strengthening the protection of children's and adolescents' rights.
The operation is coordinated, within Segup, by the Directorate of Public Security Policies and Social Prevention (DPS), with the support of federal agencies and civil society.
