Pará has the largest reduction of deforestation in the Legal Amazon in 2025
The result indicates that the State reduced deforested areas by 297 km², achieving a 60% decrease compared to the data from 2021
Pará achieved the largest reduction in deforestation, in square kilometers, among the states of the Legal Amazon in 2025, according to data released by the Deforestation Monitoring Program of the Legal Amazon (Prodes), from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe). The survey, published by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, covers the period from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025, and indicates that the State reduced deforestation by 297 km², the largest decrease in area among the states in the region. Prodes is the official annual deforestation rate in Brazil.
In 2024, the State recorded 2,395 km² of deforested areas. In 2025, the number fell to 2,098 km², a decrease of 12.4% that consolidates Pará as the main contributor to the total reduction of 11.08% recorded across the Amazon. Compared to the numbers from 2021, when deforestation reached 5,238 km², the current result shows a significant decrease of 60%.
With this result, Pará reaffirms its environmental leadership just days before the start of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP30.
Historic reduction - Governor Helder Barbalho highlighted the State's role as an example of ecological transition in the Amazon. "Pará shows that it is possible to reconcile economic development and environmental preservation. This historic reduction reinforces our State's commitment to the planet and to COP30, which will be the stage for us to present a living, productive, and sustainable Amazon," he stated.
Vice Governor Hana Ghassan emphasized that the result is the fruit of a strategy that combines technology, environmental land regularization, and incentives for the bioeconomy. "We are reaping the benefits of an integrated policy that values those who produce within legality and rigorously combats illegal practices. Pará is building the green economy model that we want to show the world at COP30," she emphasized.
The Secretary of State for Environment, Climate, and Sustainability, Raul Protazio Romão, reported that the State invests in real-time monitoring, in partnerships with Inpe and Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), and in strengthening regulatory agencies. "This reduction is a direct result of the tireless work of our teams in the field, who operate daily in the Curupira and Amazon Alive operations, tackling illegal deforestation and ensuring the protection of forests. We are combining intelligence, technology, and territorial presence. With monitoring work, we can detect and act quickly in critical areas. Pará is experiencing a new phase of environmental management, with strategic planning and ongoing action," assured the head of Semas.
The Prodes report shows that total deforestation in the Legal Amazon fell from 6,518 km² in 2024 to 5,796 km² in 2025, a reduction of 11.08%. The states of Pará and Amazonas were the main contributors to the overall reduction, both with significant decline rates.
