"Usina transforms free time into opportunities for entrepreneurship,” says Nazaré Silva, 62 years old.

Residents around the Usina da Paz Prof. Amintas Pinheiro, located in the Icuí-Guajará neighborhood in Ananindeua, in the Metropolitan Region of Belém (RMB), participated on Thursday afternoon (30) in the Fabric Painting workshop, promoted by the State Secretariat for Economic Development, Mining and Energy (Sedeme). The activity gathered 10 participants and had a duration of four hours.

The workshop, taught by visual artist Celeste Haitman, aims to boost the economic and social development of the local community through training that combines technique, talent, and creativity.

The course is part of the action schedule of the State Secretariat for Economic Development, Mining and Energy (Sedeme) at the Usinas da Paz (UsiPaz), within the Territories for Peace Program (TerPaz), executed by the Government of Pará and coordinated by the State Secretariat for Citizenship Articulation (Seac).

During the workshop, participants learned painting techniques, drawing, shading, and light application, focusing on the artisanal production of exclusive pieces. Artist Celeste Haitman explained that the activity was designed for both students with painting experience and beginners who wish to use the practice as a form of leisure and personal expression.

Each participant received the necessary materials for the workshop free of charge. The painting kit consists of brushes of various sizes, fabric napkins, t-shirts, spatulas, a painting palette, and paints.

“The proposal of the workshop is also to stimulate artistic expression and open new income generation opportunities for the residents of the region,” highlighted Celeste.

“The activities at the Usina help fill time and open new horizons,” evaluates retired public servant Nazaré Silva, 62 years old. She says she found in the workshops at Usina da Paz a way to occupy her free time and take care of her mental health. “I looked for an activity that would fill the empty hours and keep my mind occupied,” she reports. Nazaré has already participated in courses on sewing, gastronomy, and currently, the painting workshop.

“These courses were recommended as a form of therapy. But we end up seeing beyond: possibilities for entrepreneurship arise. Right here, I remembered the eco bag, which I learned to make in the sewing class — it can be painted on the canvas and turned into an ecological bag. We come for one reason and end up discovering a horizon of opportunities to undertake,” says Nazaré.

The Secretary of Economic Development, Mining and Energy, Paulo Bengtson, emphasizes that the Government of Pará, through Sedeme, in partnership with Seac and other institutions, promotes a series of courses aimed at strengthening the personal and professional capacities of the communities in Pará. The goal is to foster socioeconomic development and expand opportunities for entrepreneurship and income generation through knowledge.

“Sedeme offers 15 types of courses, through the TerPaz Coordination (Sede), and has already reached over 600 people between January and September. These initiatives reinforce the commitment of the Government of Pará to the social inclusion of populations in vulnerable situations, providing free and quality training to the territories served by the Usinas da Paz,” added the secretary.
