The Cultural Foundation of Pará (FCP), through the Curro Velho Workshop Center, has partnered with the National Youth Secretariat (SNJ) to host the "City of Youths" during COP 30 (30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change) in Belém. The space will operate from November 9 to 21, becoming a hub for accommodation, interaction, and coordination among young activists from Brazil and other countries engaged in climate discussions.

The director of the Curro Velho Workshop Center, Celeste Iglesias, received a team from the SNJ on Thursday (23) to align the details of the partnership. According to her, the initiative reinforces the role of FCP in promoting culture and social integration. "It will be an important moment to give visibility to our work and attract new partnerships," she emphasized.

Youth as protagonists in the climate agenda

The National Youth Secretariat, linked to the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, is responsible for funding the structure, with support from the Ministry of Women and the youth champion team of COP30, responsible for coordinating youth participation in climate change discussions.

"We are calling it the City of Youths during COP because the space will be a major convergence and accommodation point for young people. We want to place youth at the center of the global climate action agenda, as protagonists in this process of confronting changes and building a future that can delay the end of the world," stated Guilherme Barbosa, director of Programs and Projects at SNJ.

The "City of Youths" will function as a parallel forum to the official agenda of COP30, with debates, lectures, plenary sessions, and cultural activities. According to Barbosa, the themes include gender and climate, youth and climate, and racial issues and climate. "We will prioritize accommodating young people from the Global South for lodging, as we know they face more difficulties than young people from the Global North," he added.

Enhancing youth participation at COP30

The FCP space aims to ensure youth participation in the debate. "This youth incidence is largely due to their organizational capacity and the groups already being inserted in various discussion spaces. We also work to prepare young people for this level of debate," added the SNJ representative.

The initiative reinforces the role of the Cultural Foundation of Pará as the main executing body of the state's public cultural policies, placing its structure at the service of integration between art, society, and the major international events held in Pará.
