The Government of Pará delivered, this Saturday (25), the Pastor Gilberto Marques Overpass, located at the intersection of Avenida Mário Covas with Avenida Independência, in Belém. The name honors the Pará religious leader who passed away in 2024 at the age of 81. The new structure will benefit more than 30,000 people who travel daily between Belém and Ananindeua, promoting more fluidity, safety, and quality of life for the population.

With a length of 350 meters, a width of 14 meters, and a height of 5.5 meters, the overpass is part of a set of urban mobility works carried out by the State Government in the Metropolitan Region of Belém. The construction mobilized more than 300 workers, including direct and indirect jobs, generating income and development since the beginning of the works in 2024.

During the delivery, Governor Helder Barbalho highlighted the relevance of the new road equipment for the mobility system of the capital and neighboring municipalities.

“Today we are delivering another important piece of equipment to improve urban mobility and traffic flow in this region. We have completed a set of five overpasses delivered in a two-year agenda. This overpass removes several traffic lights that caused congestion. With this work, it will no longer be necessary to use traffic lights for those traveling from the BR-316 highway to Augusto Montenegro, nor for those using Avenida Independência in the same direction,” said the governor.

The ceremony was attended by Vice Governor Hana Ghassan, the Deputy Mayor of Belém, Cássio Andrade, the President of the Legislative Assembly of Pará, Deputy Chicão, and Federal Deputy Olivan Marques.

The Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Logistics, Adler Silveira, emphasized that the delivery represents more efficiency and comfort for those who depend daily on urban transport.

“This new equipment will bring more safety and mobility to the entire population of the Metropolitan Region of Belém, reducing travel time and transforming traffic dynamics, which directly reflects on people's quality of life,” he highlighted.

Population celebrates improvement in traffic

Taxi driver Wilson Gama celebrated the immediate impact of the work.

“Before it was chaos, especially because of the traffic lights. I have been stuck in traffic jams several times. Now it’s wonderful, with several entrances and exits. The overpass is important for all of us,” he stated.

Hospital manager Patrícia Hermes, who lives in Belém and works in Castanhal, also recognized the benefits.

“This overpass comes to optimize the mobility of those who need to travel to other municipalities. Before, the traffic was very congested, and now it will flow more quickly and organized,” she said.

For painter Luciano Sales, who uses a motorcycle daily, the change will be felt especially during peak hours.

“We will have more mobility and less hassle. It will be a significant improvement because we will spend less time on the round trip home,” he assessed.

Five overpasses delivered in two years

The Pastor Gilberto Marques Overpass is the fifth road equipment delivered by the Government of Pará in the Metropolitan Region of Belém in the last two years. The other structures delivered are:

- Overpass of BR-316 with Avenida Ananin, in Ananindeua (July 2023);

- Overpass of BR-316 with Alça Viária, in Marituba (December 2024);

- Overpass of BR-316 with Avenida Independência, in Ananindeua (April 2025);

- Overpass of Avenida Mário Covas with Avenida Três Corações, in Belém (May 2025).

The deliveries are part of the modernization program of the road infrastructure of the Government of Pará, which aims to reduce congestion, increase traffic safety, and improve urban mobility throughout the Metropolitan Region of Belém.
