Galileu Hospital celebrates patients' birthdays, providing reunions
An initiative from the Humanization sector brought emotion and hope to patients in treatment, showing that care goes beyond medical procedures
Celebrating life is part of the routine at the Galileu State Public Hospital (HPEG) in Belém. On the afternoon of last Thursday (23), patients Maria Selma and Daiane Nascimento had their birthdays celebrated in an action full of affection. Music, gestures of kindness, and the presence of families transformed the hospital environment into a space of joy and renewal.
Resident of Altamira, in the Xingu region, 44-year-old Maria Selma was referred to the Pará government unit to undergo shoulder prosthesis surgery after a domestic accident. Upon seeing her children arrive as a surprise, she couldn't hold back her tears.
"It was the best gift I could receive. Being here, taking care of my health, and still feeling the love of my family so close, who came to visit me even from afar. I was very happy for the surprise. I thank God and the entire hospital team for this moment of affection and hope," said Maria Selma.
With a serene smile, Selma highlighted how simple gestures like this make a difference in treatment. "These celebrations make us forget a little about the pain and remember that life goes on. The hospital shows that it cares about our well-being, not just the disease, but the heart of each patient," she stated.
Another person who experienced a special day was Daiane Nascimento, a resident of Marabá, in the Carajás region, who is undergoing orthopedic treatment on her knee. For her, the celebration was a relief amidst the hospital routine. "We feel special, remembered, and that gives us strength to continue. It's not just a party; it's a gesture of love that transforms treatment into something lighter," she emphasized, smiling.
Empathy
At Galileu Hospital, celebrating birthdays goes beyond marking a date on the calendar. The unit advocates this action as a gesture of care and empathy that is repeated whenever possible, transforming the hospital into a welcoming space. Galileu is recognized for its humanization actions and frequently holds celebrations for hospitalized patients, valuing each story and strengthening the bond between the team, patients, and families.
The coordinator of the Humanization sector at HPEG, Anny Segóvia, reinforces the purpose of these initiatives. "Each birthday celebrated is an opportunity to remember that care goes beyond medical procedures. It's about seeing the patient as a whole being, who needs attention, listening, and love. These moments strengthen the soul and contribute directly to the healing process," she highlighted.
Anny also explains that these actions have a significant impact on patients' emotional and psychological recovery, as they help alleviate the stress of hospitalization and bring lightness to the treatment routine. Whenever possible, the unit also promotes reunions between patients and families, creating experiences that renew hope.
"The patient is not just someone in treatment — they are a person with a history, dreams, and feelings. When we bring the family closer, we strengthen that bond and humanize the hospital environment. This affection is part of our way of caring," she added.
Humanized care
For the executive director of Galileu Hospital, Cledes Silva, actions like this are fundamental in the recovery process and reflect the unit's mission. "Technique is essential, but the human touch is what transforms care into something truly complete. Seeing patients smile, even amidst treatment, shows that we are on the right path: caring with excellence and with the heart," said the manager.
