The initiative aimed to raise awareness among the academic community about blood donation

The Pará Center for Hemotherapy and Hematology Foundation (Hemopa) held a blood donation campaign on Monday (20) at the campus of the Federal Rural University of the Amazon (Ufra), located in the Terra Firme neighborhood of Belém. The action was part of Hemopa's partnership agenda with higher education institutions, aimed at encouraging solidarity among young people and ensuring the maintenance of the state's strategic blood stocks.

The structure set up on campus welcomed students, staff, and professors from the university. The initiative reinforces the importance of new donors' participation to meet the growing demand of health units that depend on Hemopa.

Social worker Priscila Nobre, from Hemopa's Donor Recruitment Management (Gecad), highlighted that the partnership with Ufra is one of the oldest and has been resumed with good results. “This campaign comes at a very important time, especially in this pre-COP30 period, contributing to balance our blood stocks, which already show significant results. Ufra's invitation coincided with the National Book and Library Week, which made the action even more meaningful,” she explained.

The action was part of the 5th Ufra Book and Library Week.

The mobilization was part of the 5th Ufra Book and Library Week, which this year addressed the theme “Agenda 2030: aiming for a sustainable future,” in reference to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to documentary librarian Letícia Souza, the proposal is to transform the library into a lively space engaged in social causes.

“We envision the library as a welcoming and proactive space. By working on the Agenda 2030 theme, we sought to include the SDG of Health and Well-Being, and Hemopa was the ideal partner. We contacted the team, who promptly accepted the invitation. We mobilized students, staff, and even the external community, because donating blood is an act of empathy and citizenship,” she emphasized.

Paula Nery – Student of Food Science and Technology. “Having Hemopa at the university makes it much easier.”

For 26-year-old student Paula Nery, from the Food Science and Technology course, the presence of Hemopa's mobile unit facilitates student participation. “This is the second time I have donated, and I think it is very important for Hemopa to come to the university because academic routines often prevent us from going to the blood center. This way, more people can participate,” she stated.

Rayana Barata – Biology student. “I found everything very well organized. It was a smooth experience.”

Biology student Rayana Barata also praised the organization of the campaign. “I learned about the action when I was on campus and decided to participate. I found everything very well organized, from the pre-screening to the collection. The professionals were attentive and explained each step clearly. It was a smooth and very positive experience,” she reported.

Arlane Mesquita – Ufra student. “My first donation was when Hemopa came to Ufra.”

University student Arlene Mesquita, 25, also from the Food Science and Technology course, emphasized the importance of the mobile unit as an incentive for donation. “I really like when Hemopa brings the unit here because I don't always have time to go to the blood center. My first donation was during one of these campaigns, and I believe this helps reach more people and encourage new donations,” she said.

The partnership between Hemopa and Ufra aims to retain new donors and create multipliers of the donation cause within the academic community. The collected blood bags will be allocated to the treatment of patients in the public hospital network throughout Pará, benefiting people undergoing treatment for hematological diseases, accident victims, and patients undergoing high-complexity surgeries.
