The Gaspar Vianna Hospital de Clínicas (HC) celebrates the first year of implementation of the Patient Blood Management Program, internationally known as Patient Blood Management (PBM). A pioneer in Pará, HC is the first public unit in the State to adopt this innovative strategy, which already shows significant results in the safety and recovery of patients.

Coordinated by hematologist Iê Fernandez from the HC Transfusion Agency, PBM represents a paradigm shift in hospital care. "Patient Blood Management, or PBM, is a set of care practices aimed at improving patient treatment and recovery. It focuses on optimizing blood health before, during, and after procedures, emphasizing the prevention and treatment of anemia and the reduction of blood loss," explains the doctor.

With the implementation of the program, the hospital began to adopt practices that prioritize the rational and safe use of blood. "This means less risk of needing a donor blood transfusion. If necessary, it occurs with the minimum and safest amount. This reduces the chances of complications, infections, and transfusion reactions, as well as potentially speeding up hospital discharge," details the coordinator.

During this first year, the results are already concrete. The hospital recorded better care of the patient's blood in the preoperative phase, with early treatment of anemias and other alterations, and more precise indications for transfusions, minimizing risks and optimizing resources.

Additionally, there was a significant reduction in the use of blood components, with a decrease of about 25% in the use of red blood cell concentrates and 60% in the use of fresh plasma during surgical procedures. "These results show just the beginning of a great work. In countries where PBM has been implemented for longer, the benefits include reduced morbidity and mortality, infections, and length of hospital stay," emphasizes Iê Fernandez.

The Gaspar Vianna Hospital de Clínicas reinforces, with this one-year milestone, its commitment to promoting safer and more sustainable care practices, strengthening patient-centered care and establishing itself as a reference in hospital innovation in Pará.
