Galileu Hospital warns about the risks of excessive training and the importance of professional guidance

"Boom" of gyms also increases cases of musculoskeletal injuries

In recent years, the growth of gyms and the rise of the so-called "fitness trend" have transformed physical exercise into a lifestyle. However, along with the benefits of regular practice, new challenges for orthopedics have also emerged: the increase in injuries caused by excessive training, lack of proper guidance, and the cult of the perfect body.

According to orthopedic surgeon Marcus Pretti from the Galileu State Public Hospital (HPEG) in Greater Belém, the most common injuries in gyms involve tendinitis, muscle strains, and problems in the shoulders, knees, and spine. "Often, a person wants to progress too quickly and ends up overloading the body. This can lead to ruptures, premature wear, and, in more severe cases, the need for surgery," explains the doctor.

The specialist warns that persistent pain, extreme fatigue, decreased performance, and swelling are signs that the body needs rest. "Ignoring these symptoms is a mistake. Rest is part of training and is essential for muscle recovery and injury prevention," he emphasizes.

According to Pretti, both beginners and experienced athletes are susceptible to injuries, but for different reasons. "Beginners get injured due to lack of physical preparation and technique; while the more experienced, due to excessive intensity and repetition. In both cases, professional guidance is essential."

The pursuit of quick results has also led many people to adopt the so-called 'fitness trend', which prioritizes appearance over health. "These are intense workouts done solely for aesthetics, without physical assessment or proper guidance. This behavior increases the risk of injuries and can compromise health in the long term," highlights the orthopedic surgeon.

To prevent these problems, Marcus Preti recommends gradually increasing training loads, performing stretches before and after exercises, and respecting individual limits. "The role of the doctor and physiotherapist is precisely to guide, correct postural errors, and treat pain before it turns into chronic injuries," he adds.

The specialist emphasizes that taking care of the body goes far beyond appearance. "Training safely and consciously is the true path to a healthy life. The body speaks, and it is important to know how to listen."

The Galileu State Public Hospital (HPEG) is a unit of the Government of Pará, managed by the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA). The hospital has a service profile focused on orthopedic trauma, offering medium and high complexity assistance, with a focus on functional recovery and comprehensive rehabilitation of patients.
