The State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate and Sustainability (Semas) conducted a technical visit to Reciclo in São Paulo last Thursday (2), an operation that is part of the Circular Brain network and is a national reference in circular economy solutions and reverse logistics for electronic waste. The delegation was formed by Deputy Secretary Rodolpho Zahluth Bastos and Environmental Licensing Director Marcelo Moreno, who closely learned about the company's processes and discussed possible partnerships to strengthen environmental policies in Pará.

Brazil discards about 2.4 million tons of electronic waste per year, but less than 3% is properly disposed of. The data, collected by Circular Brain based on the methodology of The Global E-Waste Monitor 2024 from the UN, reinforces the need for structural actions to transform this scenario.

Semas head, Rodolpho Bastos: "We seek to understand solutions that can be applied in Pará," he said.

According to Rodolpho Zahluth Bastos, the agenda represents a milestone for Semas. “This visit is part of the package of initiatives we are working on, such as supporting the structuring of recycling cooperatives and developing the state policy for circular economy and reverse logistics. It is a fundamental step for us to understand solutions that can be applied in Pará and strengthen our public policies,” he said.

Among the measures already defined from the meeting, Semas will publish on its website all electronic waste collection points in the State. The list will be available on a page dedicated to the new Strategic Policies and Just Transition Center (NUPE) of Semas, facilitating public access to information.

Additionally, through the Circulare program, waste collectors will also be installed in strategic locations at COP30, in places and events that gather large audiences. For the secretary, these actions consolidate the paradigm shift that Pará seeks to implement. “This visit is very important for us to better understand the different sectoral arrangements of reverse logistics. We need to go beyond the role of a licensing agency for activities and enterprises for waste collection and final disposal, designing circular economy policies, fostering innovative arrangements, and supporting cooperatives. This is the basic step: to structure reverse logistics and support those who are at the forefront of this process, performing extraordinary socio-environmental work,” he stated.

Semas, in partnership with Fiepa, has joined a multilateral preparatory Working Group for the Circular Economy Agenda in Pará, aiming to promote initiatives and consolidate Pará as a national reference in circular economy practices.

Circular Brain and partnerships for the future

Circular Brain is a national platform that connects companies, governments, and society to enable the circular economy of electronic waste. Operating at different links in the chain, it promotes solutions for collection, traceability, reverse logistics, and material revaluation, contributing to reducing environmental impacts and generating income.

The CEO of Circular Brain, Marcus Oliveira, emphasized the importance of the approach with Pará. “It was a great pleasure to share with the government of Pará the solutions of Circular Brain aimed at the circular economy of electronic waste in the country. And even more, with the possibility of expanding our joint action, putting into practice SDG 17, which deals precisely with partnerships and implementations,” he affirms.
