ParáPaz strengthens prevention and support for victims of sexual exploitation
On the International Day Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Women and Children, the ParáPaz Foundation highlights the importance of protecting and guiding victims
The International Day Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Women and Children - September 23 - strengthens the alert for the prevention and combat of crimes that affect and violate human rights. The ParáPaz Foundation works in the protection and support of women, children, and adolescents in vulnerable situations, offering psychological, social, educational, and legal assistance, in addition to working with educational campaigns, activities, and guidance in schools and communities.
In 2024, more than 2,500 services were provided to children and adolescents victims of sexual violence at the Foundation's units and integrated centers throughout the State. From January to August 2025, more than 1,700 services were recorded.
The educator Eurilene Galúcio, coordinator of the ParáPaz Integrated Unit in Santarém, in western Pará, explained that this work requires sensitivity from professionals. “As a multidisciplinary team, we are concerned with discussing the topic clearly and objectively, respecting the limits of the youth age group while still clarifying what the crime of exploitation and sexual abuse is. From this important dialogue, the child gains knowledge about contact limits, thus being able to identify abuses and becoming confident to ask for help,” said the coordinator.

Recognition - Sexual exploitation occurs when a person is used for sexual purposes in exchange for money or advantages, primarily affecting children, adolescents, and women. This severity is evident in some cases handled by the ParáPaz Foundation.
Social worker Angélica Guerreiro, from the ParáPaz Integrated Service Center at Santa Casa do Pará, located in Belém, emphasized that often the recognition of violence is not immediate for the victims themselves, nor for their families.
“We have already accompanied cases of sexual exploitation of children and adolescents where the victims did not accept that they were being exploited. In some cases, even the mothers were complicit, due to the money. That is why the work of guidance and awareness is so important, so that society understands that sexual exploitation and abuse are crimes and cannot be normalized,” informed Angélica Guerreiro.
The Foundation also works in conjunction with the protection network, which includes public security agencies, guardianship councils, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the Public Defender's Office. This articulation ensures faster identification and referral of cases, strengthening care for victims.
