Pará is among the most benefited states in the New PAC Selections 2025, with 29 municipalities receiving benefits and 33 proposals approved for drainage and slope containment works. The announcement was made this Thursday (18) in Brasília by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In total, the program allocates R$ 11.7 billion to 235 cities in 26 states.

Governor Helder Barbalho attended the ceremony at the Palácio do Planalto, alongside Ministers Rui Costa (Civil House) and Jader Filho (Cities).

“Particularly, the state of Pará experiences the reality of many neighborhoods and cities that suffer from flooding. I celebrate that we are among the most benefited states with this announcement, a result of the partnership with the Federal Government and the attention of Minister Jader Filho, with resources that will benefit thousands of Pará residents in dozens of cities,” said the governor.

The list includes municipalities such as Belém, with four drainage projects, as well as Ananindeua, Altamira, Castanhal, Parauapebas, Bragança, Barcarena, Vigia, and Viseu. Slope containment works in Santarém, which will receive R$ 38 million, and in Almeirim were also included. The projects will reduce flooding, expand urban drainage, and mitigate landslide risks.

Minister of Cities, Jader Filho, highlighted that the investments represent a change in the Brazilian state's approach to prevention. He stated that drainage means preventing families from having their homes invaded by water and that slope containment ensures safety for communities living under permanent threat. “These actions restore dignity and safety to the population and reinforce that prevention has become a priority in the country thanks to President Lula,” emphasized the minister.

President Lula also emphasized the social nature of the program. He stated that governing means putting the most vulnerable back at the center of public policies. “This government stands with the Brazilian people and wants to restore the dignity that was taken from millions of people who left the countryside in search of a better life in the cities. Our commitment is to guarantee basic rights, work, education, and quality of life for those who need it most,” he declared.

In Pará, the investments represent a decisive step to address historical urbanization problems and protect thousands of families living with floods and risk areas, in a joint effort between the Union, state, and municipalities.
